security is making me insecure
      #401246 - Thu Jul 24 2008 01:04 AM

For almost 2 yrs., my online visits have been intermittent. I continued buying w/u mag until earlier this year when I found I had such an unread volume to catch up on that I needed some time out (pun?) to reintroduce myself back into the pc world...(at least, what that means to me:- I love 'em but rarely understand 'em!) I know I'm not alone, so don't mock :-))
During this time lapse my long love affair with avg free 7.5 seems to have ended. We now have avg 8.0 :-( Over a lot of years of a v.slow learning process I've experienced horrid + costly errors. Most times caused by my ignorance but also times of adhering to user advice - i.e. word-of-mouth or online sites - and thereby learning a harder way. Many crashes + (either paid-for or free) security programs later, I ended up with avg anti-virus, avg anti-spyware, zone alarm firewall (all free since the "paid-for's" always caused me the more costly repairs!) and ccleaner to take care of wiping history and reg.errors. This being due to online advice but mainly thanks to webuser experts. No attempt to flatter; merely honest.
Now I find I upgrade to avg 8.0. Fine, if it worked as 'easy-for-idiot-user' as 7.5 did. Not only do I have to spend the necessary time to try + understand the update times and scan schedules (that seem to change of their own accord) but why on earth does it take most of the day? I also unchecked the safe-searching as I'm quite happy with Mcafee Site Advisor (it is the same sort of thing isn't it?) but it still wanted to provide me with it whenever f/fox was launched. I only use i.e. for MS updates or sites that only acknowledge i.e., f/fox being yet another trusted and familiar 'feel' in my p.c. world for many years and what I'm accustomed to.
Soooo, in desperation yesterday I d/loaded Comodo Anti-virus and Zone Alarm Anti-spyware having taken advice from the experts in w/u forums plus other searches to verify. Nothing worked! Or if it appeared to work; it spewed up a lot of frightening jargon that had been laying dormant for long years! Ignorance is bliss! Yes! I don't understand enough to be enlightened! I got rid of the new stuff and (reluctantly) gave myself up to avg 8.0! I don't like it. I don't understand it's alarming jargon that it throws up - that 7.5. didn't! And...no! The 'help' menu isn't helpful either!
Grisoft.....please come back for idiots! I'm sure I'm not an isolated case! We miss you. I swear you were designed '4-ppl-like-us' - not just the 'clever-clogsies!' Gradually returning to 'my-doris' (computer use) the last thing I welcomed was a threatening and complicated lot of jargon that is somehow extremely familiar with the jargon that I've experienced many times in the past when I've had to change my security. Is the differing/diverse wording deliberately designed to scare the unaware? Why would one anti-virus programme (for instance) flag up a security flaw that had been laying dormant and overlooked by a previous security prog. even by the same co. just by being upgraded with a lot of bloated stuff that is not/may not be relevant for the user requirements? (whether a virus, spyware etc., depending on the relevant scan being run)? Who and what does a non-savi. user trust? Really? Thanks to anyone who reads this and particularly for anyone as confused as me!

Phew! That was a big read. Try Avast. Its very straightforward, easy to install, gives excellent protection and is free.
Watch some videos on You Tube first. This is what I did and it helped a lot because I knew what to expect during the download. You will find handy set up tips there as well.

Sounds to me like you may have some conflicting software on there. Basically all you need is one third party firewall along with a good anti-malware programme. Comodo Pro, ZoneAlarm or Avast as suggested above are all good but not together. Do not install more than one firewall. AVG 8 is normally the only anti-malware programme you need and is also very good as is Ccleaner and Site Advisor.

Joe.

Hi Joe

Long time no chat

Joe I use the free Avast and free Zone Alarm so why are you saying this is a problem? I opted out of AVG because their automatic update was pie in the sky

Avast and AVG are AV programmes and Zone Alarm is a firewall so in my mind there is no conflict.

OK I know all three have widened their remit but at a price so perhaps I'm wrong in thinking the majority of AVG, Avast and Zone Alarm users are using the freeby versions but if I was paying I wouldn't use any of those 3 so Joe what exactly are you saying?

1 of these days I'll get it right. ....Peter

I'm not saying that.

I think he was talking about a security suite Peter which as you know includes all three e.g. Firewall, Anti-virus and anti-malware.
You only need one such programme.

You need one good third party firewall, one good anti-virus programme and one good anti-malware programme of your choice. Thats all. Personally I prefer separate programmes but others are happy with an all in one security suite, again your choice.
Apologies if there was a lack of clarity.

Joe.
