Bye Bye Internet
      #400906 - Sun Jul 20 2008 02:24 PM

I have a desktop and a laptop wired into a netgear router.
The desktop has ceased to access the net overnight.
The lights on the router are still on.
The light on the back of the pc where the internet cable plugs in is flashing.
The laptop plugged into the same router is accessing the net.
The desktop is runing win xp.

Could someone with more knowledge than me give me some idea how to try to diagnose my problem.

Thanks very much.

Go to Start | Run

type in cmd

press enter

at the command prompt, type in the following

netsh int ip reset reset.txt

press enter

Close off command prompt when done and reboot your pc

see if you can connect

Tried that - but I'm afraid it makes no difference.
Still no connection.

Thanks anyway!

Can you ping your router?

Go to start | Run type in cmd

Type in ping 192.168.0.1 or whatever your router IP address is and press enter. What are the results?

Also doubly make sure that the cable is in properly

4 replies from the ping
packets sent =4 packets received =4 lost =0
round trip time in milli-seconds average - 0ms

Sorry I've been tardy in getting back!
YES - firewall off = internet
firewall on = no internet

Obviously not good to run without firewall
so what should be my next move?

BTW - thanks very much for this.
