Trojan Generic10.BDRL
      #401038 - Tue Jul 22 2008 08:29 AM

OS - XP Home Edition with Service Pack 3

Hi, I'm new to this site and hope to try and find some answers to a computer problem.

I recently had someone install the bought version of AVG8. After Norton's I was happy with the AVG until the other day after it's usual daily scan it "picked up" on two files with the Trojan Generic10.BDRL in them. One file is hp recovery wizard and the other system volume information. AVG has secreted the files in the virus vault. However, on googling the trojan name I came across someone else with exactly the same problem, same trojan same two files, then I read about false positives with AVG8 and now I'm wondering if there really IS a trojan in these two files?

AVG deletes the contents of the virus vault in 30 days so I don't want to just leave them and then find out I need the files (I don't know much about this sort of thing). I can't find Trojan Generic10.BDRL listed anywhere only against this problem, so is it a real trojan, is it something or nothing and what do I do about it please?

Would value your help and appreciate what you have to say.

Many thanks

oldbean

First thing to do is update AVG and run a scan , as any known false positives may have been corrected with/in the latest update files.

If the results are still the same take a note of the hp recovery wizard file location and upload it to... here...where it will be scanned by numerous virus engines. You will then be presented with a list of results from which you can determine the chances of it being a genuine infection. If you need further help let us know the results.
The other file that's located in "system volume information" , is in a system restore point. Chances are it's the same file and removing the restore point would stop AVG from flagging this up. However i wouldn't remove the restore point till you are sure your pc is clean.

Reading between the lines i suspect these are indeed false positives. Let us know how it goes.

Just to add , as you have the "paid for" version of AVG you are entitled to free online support which can be accessed , if you feel the need , from.... here

Hi FF

Many thanks for your reply and help. Firstly, AVG runs a scan daily and it has only picked up the Trojan and isolated the two files once. Every subsequent scan reveals nothing like that. Someone else told me to delete all the system restore points by turning it off etc which as yet I haven't done. I don't know what I'm supposed to do after that.. restore the two files or not? I ask because with the HP file I'm sure that has to be on my computer so if AVG deletes it after 30 days that's gone for good.

What would happen if I restore the two files to whence they came and then did another scan? Firstly would it mess the computer up if they were real trojans or if they aren't would AVG pick up on them again?

Thanks for your link to AVG help. I did email from another email they sent a while ago but heard nothing this time, not sure if they rec'd it so will contact them again via the link you gave me.

I'm really fed up with this because I didn't have as much trouble with Norton's yet everyone told me to get rid of that which I did and get the AVG8.... now from what I read it could be more trouble than it's worth and I've PAID for the darned thing.

Thanks again for your help, any other comments would be greatly appreciated.

OB

That's fine then , it would appear that both files are in system restore.

Here's what to do. Remove all the system restore points except the most recent one. Now reboot your pc , check AVG for any updates , and run a scan. Let us know how that goes.

Many people suggest removing Norton , not because of it's detection abilities which are very good , but because Norton products tend to use up a lot of resources which cause pc slow down.
In general AVG is a good program . You may have read posts where people are having teething problems with it , but for the vast majority of users ( myself included ) it runs very well . The fact is you very rarely read about positive feedback.

Finally , I'd like to add that you might want to consider reverting to the free AVG version when your "paid for" version runs out. With a little bit of common sense you can protect yourself reasonably well with free applications. I've done so for the past 4 years.

Thanks again FF, I haven't done the restore points yet, got other pressing things to do at the minute, but can I ask a couple of questions? Shall I set a restore point and then delete all before that? Also, when I've done what you've said and rebooted, scanned etc etc, what do I do then re the two files sitting in the virus vault? I assume they have to be reinstated though not sure of this. AVG automatically scans everyday, in fact I can't find how to stop it and just do manual scans when I need them and everyday it's found nothing...only warnings and that's tracking cookies etc.

Thank you for your help, I really appreciate it.

Although you have the "paid" version and i use the free i would guess that changing the scan settings will be similar.

Open AVG and at the top of the screen click on tools then advanced settings. When the "settings" screen opens click on the small box beside "schedules". Now click on scheduled scan. If you remove the tick from the "enable this task" box , click apply and then OK , then AVG will not run a scan unless you manually start one.

No need . If you follow the instructions from my last post it will automatically leave you with one restore point ( the most recent one ) and will remove all the rest.

My understanding is these files are located in older restore points . If you do as i suggest , when you rescan these files should no longer be flagged up.
Let me know what the scan finds , if anything , and what , if anything ,is in the vault.
