E Drive
      #400396 - Mon Jul 14 2008 09:25 PM

I have just purchased a Samsung L74 Wide digital camera. When the camera is connected to the PC it is meant that you open the E Drive to see a DCIM folder which you double click on in order to see the images you wish to view and edit. However, when i double click on the E drive in My Computer it simply tells me to insert a disk?
Does anyone know how to set the E drive so that i can use it?
Many thanks folks!

George.

More information is needed:

1. When you plug the camera in, do you get the normal ping pong sound with an icon appearing in the system tray (Notification area), or do you get something else or nothing?

2. Have you loaded the Samsung software?

3. On the camera, do you get notification that it’s connected?

Incidentally, it won’t always be drive E as other devices could be plugged in.

Hi BurrWalnut..and thank you for responding.....

Yes, when the camera is connected to the PC i do get the ping pong sound but nothing else happens.

There is no icon in the sytem tray either.

There is nothing on the camera to indicate that it is connected but the camera is working ok......tried it on my daughters PC and it opens up in her E Drive and we can get the images.

I have loaded the software and the camera driver is installed - it shows up in my Add/Remove programmes box.

I have checked all the other drives and can't find anything at all for the camera.

According to Samsung it should be in the Removeable Drive - which is E on my PC.

I am mystified and almost mortified as to why it is not working?

The only word i can think of as i go down for the third time is "HELP"!

Many thanks.

George

I don't think you're going to drown!

Try this:
1. Plug the camera in, wait for the ping-pong then uninstall it by right-clicking My Computer > Properties > Hardware Tab > Device Manager, look for the camera, right-click it and choose Uninstall.

2. Physically remove the camera and restart the computer.

3. Plug the camera in.

I presume you have put the photographs on your daughter’s computer. If not, do so then delete them from the camera, format the card in the camera and take a single picture to load on your computer.

If it doesn’t work, try formatting the card in Disk Management, i.e. right-click My Computer > Manage > Disk Management and right-click the graphic for the card.

The other thing to try is a card reader.

I have been into Computer Management - Disk Management - as you instructed and find the following information:-
C:/ Drive Healthy - F:/ (My External Drive) Healthy
Disk 1 Removeable (E:/) No Media
Disk 2 Basic 150GB Online (WD USB2 (F:)
Primary Partition is blue

I have noted that under Properties it does say "Change drive letters" or words to that effect but i have no clue as to what that means?

Does this help?

When the camera is unplugged from the USB socket, you shouldn't see a drive letter for it in 'My Computer'. Try going to 'My Computer' without the camera plugged in and see what drives are shown. If you see an E:\ drive, it won't be anything to do with the camera. I think that would be the CD or DVD drive (perhaps try putting a disk in it to see if the 'No Media' status changes).

When the camera is plugged in, I would expect a drive to be assigned to it with the letter 'F'. It doesn't have to be 'E' (as Samsung says) if 'E' is already taken up by something else. If no further drive letters appear when the camera is plugged in, then the camera isn't being detected properly and that might put a slightly different slant on the problem.

The above does not apply if E:\ appears only when the camera is plugged in and disappears when the camera is disconnected. This would mean it is definitely your camera being detected. If E:\ is there all the time, further thought is needed as to why another drive letter doesn't appear when the camera is plugged in.

Have you disabled any drive letters in TweakUI or any other Windows tweaking tool? If so, make sure a couple of drive letters above 'E' are available (and not disabled) for Windows to use.

Sorry, regarding the drive letter, I meant 'G' as being the next available drive letter that doesn't look to be taken.

Hi Mart.........and thank you for responding....when i open My Computer i have the C: drive, the D: drive - which is my CD/DVD drive - and the F: drive - which is my external hard drive - and the Removeable E: drive. I have been into TeakUI and the next drive free is G: - however, i'm not sure as to how (or should I) one changes or adds another drive letter and make it work? Having read the instruction manual for the camera it does in fact say "Double click on the E Removeable drive or whatever letter it is for the Removeable drive"! Sorry Mart - there is of course a letter for the alphabet in the drives colum in TweakUi but G has a ? on it - as do the rest of the letters????

Does this help?

George.

I don't think question marks next to the drive letters in TweakUI matter. As long as one (or some) are ticked beyond 'F' (your highest used drive letter). A number of ticks beyond that means that Windows can use them if it needs to. Windows will need them if you plug additional USB devices in.

The strange thing about your E drive is that it sounds as if it is showing in My Computer whether you have the camera plugged in or not. This shouldn't be the case. Drive letters should appear and disappear as USB or firewire devices are plugged in and out, or turned on and off.

In my case, I have a combo DVD/CD drive on a firewire connection that gets assigned a drive letter only when the drive is turned on. The letter disappears when the drive is turned off. Similarly, even if I turn my USB printer on, it not only produces an icon under 'Scanners and Cameras' in 'My computer' but also another drive letter in the 'Devices with Removable Storage' section of My Computer (listed as a removable disk). Both of these disappear when the printer is turned off. The camera Drive letter comes and goes as the camera is connected or disconnected. However, the drive letter for the camera is not always the same. It might be H, I or J depending on what other USB devices (printer - DVD drive) are plugged in and turned on at the time.

If your E drive is showing in My Computer all the time, regardless of whether the camera is connected and turned on, I can't see that E:\ would be the camera. Could it be a USB printer that is permanently turned on? Try turning it off to see if E:\ disappears. Of course it could be some sort of Vista behaviour that I don't know about but I wouldn't think so. I'm on XP, are you?

Hi Mart...Yes, I am using Windows XP Home...all drive letters from G down to Z are ticked and all have the ? on them. Yes, the Removeable (E:) drive is showing all the time in My Computer whether the camera is plugged in or not. The A (Floppy), C Local, D (DVD/CD-RW), E (Removeable) and F (External Hard Drive) are all showing all the time in My Computer. So is an icon for my Lexmark P4350 3 in 1 printer. I have disconnected the printer but it makes no difference EVEN though the E drive icon does disappear. When i connect the camera no drive comes up for me to click on?
How do i install a G drive so the PC recognises it and it being the one i use the camera for? Can this be done?? Still but hanging in there.

George

At least you know that the E drive letter is to do with the printer and can now be discounted. Also that a new drive letter (G probably) should appear when the camera is plugged in and turned on. Are you connecting via a USB hub or is the camera being plugged directly into a port on the computer? If it's via a hub, is it a powered one? If the camera is connecting via a hub, try connecting it directly to a USB port on the computer.

I connect the camera directly into the CPU....I do not use a hub....ive tried connecting the camera to USB ports on the front and rear of the CPU but it makes no difference........i can't understand it because it works perfectly when i connect it to my daughters PC who has the same set up as me...?

From reading previous posts, I wasn't sure if you were aware how Windows is supposed to behave when additional USB devices are plugged into a USB port (thinking that the 'always present' E dive was where to look for the camera data)?

With that bit cleared up, cures for a USB device not being detected range from easy(ish) to going a bit deeper into things. It would be a case of me just getting lucky if I just hit upon the right one (although someone else might). Problems have mostly all been written about before on the Internet and it might be worth researching what has been tried or found by others with similar difficulties.

This Microsoft page would be worth a read and others can be found by using search terms such as 'usb device not detected' or 'usb camera not detected'.

Something that might be worth trying:
Boot up with the camera plugged in and turned on. I've a firewire device that won't always detect unless that is done. It shouldn't be necessary to do that of course but it would be an interesting thing to try. Just one other thought. My camera (an Olympus) springs into life as soon as the USB lead is plugged in. However, options are given on the LCD screen and I have to select 'PC' before the computer will assign a drive letter to it. I know you've had the camera working on another computer, so can't really have overlooked anything but I just thought I'd mention that anyway.

Many thanks Mart...ive had a look at the web page you mentioned....the part about uninstalling all USB ports is a little scary as ive got about 12 of them showing....and whilst the instruction says re-install all ports after re-booting i can't see any 're-install' tag in the right click sub menu...yes, it does have 'Uninstall' but not 'reinstall'?
I will perservere and carry out some searching on the web....but it looks as if i will have to take the PC into my local repair shop and accept the exorbatant £75 per hour charge!!
Thank you so much for your time and help.
Take care.

George.

Hi
This is just a long shot but did you switch your camera on after you connected it to the PC.
If not the PC will not know that the camera is connected

Any help is a blessing in disguise !!
