Found new hardware
      #400453 - Tue Jul 15 2008 12:20 PM

Hi - Dont know if this is a Vista problem or just a PC problem. I keep getting "Found new hardware" notice. I don't have really new hardware and the couple of bits I have seem to be working fine ( Tom Tom and external drive) If I allow it to try to install driver, it fails. It then tells me to insert the CD. BUT it doesn't tell me what the new hardware allegedly is? How do I find out please?

Have a look in Device Manager for any errors, i.e. right-click Computer > Properties > Device Manager.

Thanks for reply
I think I have found what the PC thinks is the problem, 'though I'm not sure how to fix it
It seems to be saying my printer driver is the problem (Brother) However, the printer is on a network with my wife's PC that runs on XP. When I bought my new printer 9 months ago,it had Vista Home Premium installed. I got in touch with Brother who gave me directions to software that made the printer Vista OK. All is working fine on both computers, so should I tamper, or leave alone?

J

I presume it’s attached by USB cable to the XP machine, i.e. it’s not a true wireless printer!

I can only guess but I suspect you have installed it on the Vista machine using the USB cable. You have a choice of leaving it as it stands or removing it in Vista, then adding it again. I can't advise you as you may have had a lot of problems getting it to work initially.

However, to remove and add it again:
Turn on the XP machine and the printer then on the Vista machine go to Control Panel > Printers, right-click the printer and Delete. Now click Add Printer and follow the wizard to add a network printer.

Thanks
I will keep this suggestion in case it goes wrong. However, you are right that it was a real load of hassle and I was really grateful to Brother, as my printer was nearly 2 yrs old. They were really helpful and it took a couple of days.
Probably stick with it at present, unless it goes wrong.

Thanks again

J
