I am using Windows XP (including SP3)and have recently downloaded the free version of AVG 8. My computer is now taking ages to load up from start. Is it me or is there something I have to do to get back up to speed?

Okay, firstly make sure you haven't got these installed as well.
Spybot S&D Threatfire.
As there are known conflicts with AVG 8. In fact, if you have any other security software, (including hardware firewalls) it might well be worth going to that company's own website (and hopefully message board forum) for any information about AVG 8. It's been causing a few headaches out there!
Assuming all is well with your security software, and it's not a conflict that's slowing things down to a crawl, check to see how much memory your system has. According to AVG itself, AVG 8 needs a minimum of 256mb to play around with (for "minimum", read "for it work work normally, you need around twice that much" ). If you're low on memory, your PC could be affected by slowdown as it tries to fire up.
Hope that helps!

many thanks Tigerwolf. It appears that I only have 256MB so I guess AVG is not for me anymore. I have only just gone on Broadband as I was on dial up and am pretty useless at computers so am still learning. Have you any suggestions as to what I could use given the ancient nature of this machine. There does not appear to be any other security system on it as I am only using BT option 1. ANY help you could offer will be very much appreciated.

You could try Avira's (free) Antivir, but to be honest, you may to struggle with the RAM you have. http://www.free-av.com/en/download/1/download_avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html
Having said that, see system requiremnts quoted at the bottom of the following page - suggests you may get away with it http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/AntiVir-Personal-Edition.shtml
I's a good product, and I use it. If you're going to give it a whirl, remove AVG 8.0 first via Add/Remove Programs. You'll know if there's a difference by trying it.

Like Heidi, I'd suggest Avast for your anti virus needs. Here's information as to system requirements for it;
http://www.avast.com/eng/system-requirements-avast-home.html
If that turns out to be more than your system can handle, try going to Filehippo and downloading an older version (the list of versions to download is on the right, starting with the newest version at the top of the list)
Here's the link for Filehippo's older versions of Avast, available to download;
http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/tech/24/
Please note, I have no idea if these older versions are still supported by Avast, or if they're less memory intensive. But at least it gives you more options.
Two other things you should be aware of.
1. AVG 7.5 will continue to be updated until the end of the year - NOT until the end of May as they originally stated.
2. If you find you're really struggling for an Anti Virus to run of any kind, a suggestion would be to upgrade your memory. 1GB will set you back less than £20 nowadays, and it would make a significant improvement to your system. Most independent computer stores would charge a nominal fee for upgrading it. But I'd steer clear of PC World, as they tend to be pretty expensive!
Best of luck!

Thanks to Heidi and Tigerwolf for the advice. Sorry for the delay in responding but the machine has been in the shop getting some more memory added. I have also ditched AVG and opted for a different system. The machine is now running a lot faster and I am a happy bunny again! Many thanks and I know where to come if I need any more help in the future.
