Hi all, Bit confused, as usual. I thought SP3 was for people using Beta, now windows update tells me I need to install it.I have had all the new updates up till now but it says part of it is for those who have missed updates. Can anyone clarify if I need it and if so, all of it. This is a 4 hour download for me. many thanks

My PC apparently felt differently... having downloaded (c/o windows updates) SP3, my AMD PC apparently must have gone online when I was sleeping, read all the problems AMD owners claimed to have with it crashing their machines, thought "heck with that", and promptly uninstalled and deleted it without my knowing, because there's not a trace of it on my system. Anywhere. I kid you not.
Who said computers aren't getting smarter?

I don't agree that you 'need' SP3. From what I've read, most home users have little, if anything, to gain from having it. You might find this interesting reading. However, sooner or later, M$ will doubtless decree that only the XP users who have SP3 will be able to get security updates. Like you, I face 4 or 5 hours downloading this update. It used to be possible to get SP3 on a CD via the M$ site, but I think that this is no longer the case. It might be worth ringing M$ on 0870 6010 100 to see if you can get a CD.

You mentioned there that people without SP3 will no longer receive updates. I have Vista Basic but still have not been offered SP1. Would this apply to me as well?

I didn't say that people without SP3 would no longer receive updates at present, only that eventually Microsoft will probably offer updates only to those people who do have SP3. This is what happened quite a long time after SP2 came out - XP users without SP2 can't, as far as I know, get updates from M$. Sorry, I know nothing about Vista. Is there a way that you can check if SP1 is available for you via Windows/Microsoft Update or whatever Vista uses?

Hi Madeline, SP1 for Vista is not being offered to some users through WU because there are still some outstanding hardware conflicts. AMD processors being one of them.

Madeline, my dearest ( and only) dial up pal, Many thanks for that, very interesting and informative link. As I said earlier, all my MS updates are there, so it appears I don't need to be in any hurry to download SP3. I will certainly use that number you gave.
Many, many thanks as usual. Keep on pedaling the modem. Graham

Not all AMD processors are not involved so if you've already got SP1 and your laptop is working ok then you don't have to worry.

Can I join in this one please? I downloaded SP3 from the Microsoft Update and saved it to desktop - it took ages to download. Then it froze totally as it said it was starting the installation - I waited over an hour and nothing happened. I then got the message "SP3 failed". I have tried to download and install it twice, once to my PC (Compaq Presario XP Professional) and once to the Laptop (Acer Travelmate XP Home). Can't get anywhere with it. I still keep getting a "Updates are ready for your computer" bubble in taskbar on the PC. This happens with monotonous regularity. What do I do please?

Try downloading it from here and save it to your Desktop, memory stick or CD. Then disconnect from the internet, disable firewall, antivirus and active spyware monitoring programs before attempting a fresh install. Good luck.

I had the same problem, but as soon as I disabled my AVG Antivirus it went in like a charm.

Hi
Just to add my experience.
I have kept up with the numerous XP updates so elected to go for SP 3. Did not know about the AMD processor issue though
Can't remember how long it took to download. Installing took the longest. Give yourself a good hour for download/install with an average BB connection.
After rebooting I found I had 2 errors which were flagged up. Goggled them and found out they were to do with my Dlink wireless adapter. Downloaded Dlinks latest driver. Problems solved.
What SP 3 has done is to tidy up previous updates. My PC seems to running slightly quicker but this of course is subjective and could be just me
