Free anti-virus and firewalls

I've had Bullguard anti-virus installed for over two years and it's by no means been problem free. It expires in a few weeks and, because of the problems I've had with it I'm keen to go for a freebie anti-virus and Firewall, because of the various articles I've read about them in Web User, being as good ...if not better than the paid for ones. Can anyone recommend any worthwhile freebies please?
