Different antivrus scanners give different advice - which is correct?
      #399936 - Wed Jul 09 2008 06:19 PM

I've run free online avti-virus scans on my system after my resident AV software 'detected' some malware in a place that seemed unusual. AVG reported having found 6 high severity infections. Kaspersky found 1 (in a downloaded product from Adobe!).

Both of these reports can't be right can they? They can both be wrong, can't they?

So what do I do: use a statistically significant number of different anti-virus vendors' product and take an average?

Surely code is infected or it isn't (assuming the virus signatures are sufficiently well defined). Why should there be inconsistent answers?

You're right, they can.

You may need to research each item flagged up and check out the results to see what it actually is.

If only life was that simple.

There are millions of infections out there and new ones appearing hourly, I suspect it's impossible to sufficiently define every virus signatures.

Just my humble opinion.

Joe.
