See anything familiar ...

I did not notice any problems with 951748. However I read elsewhere that the problem occurs in combination with the ZoneAlarm firewall; do you have ZA installed?
I also heard that ZoneLabs and Microsoft are working on a solution for the problem. As a temporary circumvention, changing the Internet Zone firewall slider to "Medium" instead of "High" will allow normal network access.

Hi/ Using ZA for firewall checked settings and are already on medium. I over came problem by doing system restore to yesterday. Some forums are saying the problem occurs only on certain internet suppliers, virgin being one ,which is what i use. I found it locked up even when trying dial up.

Looks like a problem for M$, ZA & your ISP to sort out. Sorry it didn't fit the bill.

I have had the same problem (my ISP is Belgacom in Belgium). These are the updates:
Security Update for Windows XP (KB951748) Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - July 2008 (KB890830)
Also for me a System Restore to yesterday fixed the problem. The yellow, shield-shaped icon keeps reappearing, of course.
Anyone else with the problem?

I'm with VIRGIN , i use zonealarm, i installed 951748 and have had no problems.
so i don't think virgin is part of the problem. more likely the settings in zonealarm

There is an article on M$ 'Black Tuesday' update on The Register (www.theregister.co.uk) today. My reading of it is that M$ are pointing the finger at ZA (they would, wouldn't they?). ISPs are not the cause. You have a choice of backing out the update or getting another firewall - even temporarily (as in 30 day trial).

I'm with VIRGIN, i use zonealarm 7.0.470.000, I installed MS update 951748 and have problem connecting to the internet via IE and/or Firefox.
I called up Virgin support and they told me the problem is with ZA and that they've been having high volume calls regarding connectivity problems and mostly it is ZA users. I bravely surf the net with my ZA shutdown and I came to know thru ZA Users Forum that indeed problem started with update 951748 which ZA recommends to be uninstalled as a workaround to get connectivity again until MS fixes the problem. I, however, just lowered the slider from High to Medium on the Internet Zone Security setting of ZA(workaround suggested by MS) and thus I am now able to connect to the net.

I've just been talking to a user on another forum, he doesn't use zonealarm (using comodo) and he had the same problem, had to do a system restore.
the plot thickens

So much was done on my main computer yesterday, it's that time of the month when cleanup and backup takes place. When all was finished, including Windows latest updates, there was no access to the internet. Time to sleep on it.
Today, dug out the second computer, no problem connecting, down came Windows Updates, once installed, no connection recognised says Windows. Removed the updates and here I am.
ISP BTYahoo/ Firewall Zone Alarm.
If, as mentioned above, MS - ISP or Zone Alarm are at loggerheads at least it's one way of keeping us safe!
Oh dear! The updates are sitting waiting to be installed again. Decisions! Decisions!

Did just that, no update available.
Am back on board my #1 computer, removed KB941748. That cured the connection problem.
I've kept ZA on High for Internet Zone and left the pair of them fight it out!
What I have to do now is scrub the Acronis backup made yesterday and renew. Which one should I sue for wasting my computing time?
Not been my day really, bought a new garden vac this morning, got home and the damned thing don't work!

I'm having the same problem, but only with my Vista laptop - XP laptop & desktop are working fine Internet is obviously connected as I can sign into MSN messenger & download updates for Avast, but nothing hapens on either Maxthon or IE, think I'll try removing the update mentioned in previous posts I'm with Orange & use my router firewall so the ZA isn't relevant to me either.

Arghhhh!! I don't have that update listed in my uninstall updates list - the ones I have dated yesterday are: KB953432, KB953465, KB950582, KB905866, KB951978 and KB952709
Just noticed on Vista lappy that browser page has finally loaded after about 10 minutes
