Hello. I am having trouble with my (shared) internet connection. It is a BT-Homehub-5290 and I am using a TPLINK TL-WN322G wireless usb adaptor.
It frequently loses the signal and displays the message 'acquiring network address' only to reconnect very shortly after. This is very frustrating, especially when I am streaming video. My system is XP Home and I am using firefox v3.
Please can anyone help.
p.s. maybe there is there a program which will analyses this fault or one which will keep the connection established or maybe I require some settings tweaked.
Many thanks - Steve

This is always a difficult one to solve but here are a few things to try:
Changing the channel number in the router sometimes helps with connection and speed problems. Change it by a factor of 6, e.g. if it’s currently 12 make it 6 or if it’s 1 make it 7.
Move the router to find out if nearby electrical or radio activity or something metallic is causing interference.
Delete the wireless connection and set it up again.

Thanks. I will try.
May need some time working out how to change the number of channels though - not sure how to do this exactly.

Type bthomehub.home into a browser address bar window. The default user name and password are admin and admin respectively.
Now look for a section named wireless, then a setting for the channel number.

Hi. Cant seem to change the channel number. wont let me log on for some reason. have tried admin and admin as you suggested then admin and the device serial number (as have read on other websites - for newer software versions) but still not work. i will keep on investigating this.

I helped someone a couple of years ago and the log on details were admin and admin.
They've obviously changed, didn't you receive a manual with the hub, or a web link?

For later versions, the password is your unique Home Hub serial number.
This link . . . >> The BT Home Hub Explored and it's internal links proved invaluable help when I was trying to sort out a friends unrelated Hub problems. It may prove useful to you in the future.
Note the advice: "By default, the BT Home Hub comes with Channel 1 enabled on the automatic session. Many have found this setting causes repeated drop outs. Apparently, the BT help desk actually recommend you use channel 9-11 for best connectivity using the manual setting".

Thanks all. I have reset the channel to 11 and reinstalled my usb adaptor(that was the hardest part). Router is not near metallic surfaces etc. It has disconnected but hopefully that will help.
Steve
p.s. why does my usb adaptor become unrecognized in some of my base stations usb ports and not in others. They are all the same i thought.
Cheers

1. You didn’t need to uninstall/reinstall the USB adapter but never mind it can do no harm.
2. You’ve now moved to another difficult area, USB (Unreliable Serial Bus). I could post several A4 pages on this topic but I shall resist. However, you should be aware that it’s always best to stick to the same USB port, i.e. don’t keep changing a device from one port to another.

Thanks. Its working now so not going to touch.. if it isn't broken .. dont fix it!
Yes I noticed that if I change USB ports the device becomes unrecognisable in some of them.. then doesnt always work in the one you originally had it in .. so best to leave alone (when working)

Hi. Done all the above and it still continually disconnects and connects. Its very annoying as I have to refresh my browser and start all over again (when it comes to watching streaming videos etc)..
Any more ideas would be appreciated..
Thanks

Did you try my third suggestion, remove the connection and set it up again? I don't mean uninstalling the adapter but right-clicking the wireless icon and removing it, then setting it up by entering the SSID and security key.

I have set up a completely new wireless network connection. My connection seems ok in the main but unstable at times, possibly peak times.
Are some USB adaptors better than others for obtaining a signal?

This can often be caused by the Windows wireless software trying to manage your connection, conflicting with the software provided by the adapters' manufacturer.
Turn off Windows by right-clicking My Computer > Mange.
Click the + next to Services and Applications, then Services.
Scroll down to Wireless Zero Configuration.
Right-click and select Properties.
Set Startup type to disabled, and stop the service.
Reboot and see how it goes.

OK OK I can't go any faster! aaaaaaaaaaaagh!

Hi.Tried disabling the Wireless Zero Configuration however the problem is still recurring so have re-enabled it as it seeems to re-connect better then.
It is happening now (17.54) so maybe its due to peak user times?
Or maybe not .. the service should be continuous.
Any other ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks - Steve

Have a look at the manufacturer's site for an updated driver for your TPLINK adapter.

Thanks. Updated my drivers. Will see how it goes. It was still disconnecting earlier this evening. Seems to be more stable later in the day.
