PVR newbie-info req....
      #399706 - Mon Jul 07 2008 06:50 PM

Looking for some "basic" info on PVR's. I am looking for a stand alone unit with a freeview tuner which will:
1: record either freeview or sky(external input?) whils watching one or the other.
2: pause live tv.

Is this a reasonable request? am unsure if some of the units available will be able to record sky (or whether my sky input will connect to a pvr)whilst watching another channel.

Any info and reccomendations greatly appreciated.

Thanks

A sky plus HD box or the basic sky + box would be the best bet for you

don't forget all your freeview programs are available on sky

Any PVR that will allow you watch one paid for digital channel whilst recording another will need to have two decoders, one for each channel. The only two on the market are either Sky+ or VirginMedia V+, both of which require a subscription. However if they are both Freeview channels then something like this seems to do everything you need.

I've got a Humax 9200T. It's a fantastic bit of kit and I can highly recommend it.

Thanks for the info, am still slightly confused....will the Humax 9200T accept an input from Sky? and is there a product out there with the ability to record sky and also have an inbuilt freeview to enable dual recording of either?

Sorry if this is getting confusing and slightly long winded......

You can't hook up the 9200T to accept Sky. It's just a Freeview PVR. If you're wanting to record Freeview AND Sky, you'll need to subscribe to Sky and get one of there Sky+ Boxes. You'll get a load of information about Freeview/PVRs/Sky+ at Digital Spy.

Thanks again, have spoken to humax and there may be a product out there that will do what i am looking for without subscribing to sky+.......

I know that humax intend having a freesat HD PVR, but as yet is not available. The first model though will be a single stream receiver, which means you can only watch and record the same satellite channel.

Dual stream recording will follow quite a bit later

No matter what PVR you get, recording from Sky means you need to pay for a Sky subscription. You can record the programme you are watching on Sky because you've paid to have one signal decoded. To record another Sky signal whilst watching the first one needs two decoders and only Sky+ offers that.
