I am trying out the Ubuntu version of Linux and read somewhere that firewalls are not necessary in Linux because it is so secure that hackers can't hack into it. I would have thought that where there is a hacker there is always a way to hack into something so does anyone who uses Linux know if a firewall really isn't necessary?
If one is needed, has anyone any recommendations?

While being no expert at all on Linux. I have just recently begun to seriously use a distribution that is similar to Ubunut (OpenSuSE). It comes complete with a firewall. And yes, I'm sure you need one - there is no end to the sickness of the human mind among certain people - usually male!
I was recently amazed to find that in (biased) tests, the firewall in Win Xp was not even as much use as a pinch of goat sheyet, so I immediately replaced it. It's possible therefore that the firewall shipped in your Linux distribution by default may not be sufficiently robust. Fortuitously, the linux world has a confusing and gigantic array of product developers so there's bound to be an alternative available, as well as some comments about the relative merits of same. Try searching, in Google, on RPM repositories and then for firewall products within those repositories.

Linux does have it's own built in firewall, IPTables .

Many thanks XEyedBear. I read similar (and probably biased) comments about the firewall shipped with XP. Apparently it stops things getting in but does nothing to stop things getting out.
Since reading your posting I have come across some firwalls for Ubuntu but they seem very complicated (putting it mildly) to set up. Still, it keeps the brain cells active, I suppose, trying to get to grips with it all.
Pity there isn't a Linux forum here!

Thanks bungler. I just discovered that one has to know quite a lot about IPTables in order to set up the firewall as it is not set up automatically
