I'm in total agreement , CCleaner is an excellent product. However when using any third party application to clean the registry there is the potential for an entry/s to be mistakenly deleted . and as you've found to your cost , cause major problems.
I've never had a problem after using CCleaners registry but it's prudent to use the programmes back up option , and/or create a system restore point , before cleaning your registry. That way if the unexpected happens you have a couple of ways to restore any damage that's been done.
