I have the free download of AVG. It is fine but due to run out shortly, I noticed on your website somewhere that I can download a permanent copy. Can you tell me where to get it because everytime I look I only see the 30 day free one. When I find it do I have to uninstall the free version and if so how do I do it?
Regards Maureen

Can I check that you want to download the free version of AVG 8.0? If so get it from here. I would suggest that you download the file and save it. Then exit from the internet and use Add/Remove Programmes to uninstall your old version. Reboot your PC but don't reconnect to the net. Now install the new version you have just downloaded.

Hi Greysts We cross paths again. Many thanks I have downloaded AVG 8.0 free. The one I had was only for 30 days but I had no probs. Had bought a Norton from ebay like I have done in the past for XP. But even though they reckon it was suitable for Vista I decided against it and stayed with AVG.
No doubt we will meet again. Regards Maureen

Hi there Mau
I thought I'd add a couple of extra pieces of information to your question. The first one being that AVG 7.5 isn't being terminated yet... it's actually had it's termination day put back from the end of May until the end of 2008. No doubt in part to the horrendous amounts of system conflicts and general chaos AVG 8 has caused since it's launch! (Don't even ask what it did to my system...)
The other thing, is that if you're not too familiar with free anti-virus software, you might always want look into AVAST 4.8, especially if you're running an older machine, or a machine low on memory. AVG 8 is a bit of memory hog! (Minimum ram requirements of 256mb). AVAST tends to be rather friendlier with some security software on your system than AVG too. Just something to bear in mind...
Best of luck with whatever you choose to use, anyway! Tigerwolf

Hi Tigerwolf - I have been having a nightmare with my PC since AVG 8.0 also - I have heard that it conflicts with Spybot S&D - does anyone know if this truly is the case? Also, I find it annoying that there is no option to do a complete scan only every now and then - why does it HAVE to be every day? AVG 8.0 slows everything down horrendously, and takes for ever to do the scan, during which time just about nothing else works. I am ready to uninstall it, but what is the best totally free alternative anyone please?

Hi Tigerwolf Thanks for the info, however I took Greysts advice and downloaded AVG 8 and did as he said before I installed it. So far so good. Hope it stays this way if I have any probs will take it from there. Regards Maureen

It doesn't have to be every day , in AVG if you click on tools > advanced settings > schedules > scheduled scan , you can choose , from the drop down box , to schedule a scan every Monday or Tuesday or Wednesday etc , and , at any particular time you choose.

It's always better to scan when your pc is idle and nothing is running. This may speed things up a bit ( along with AVG's fast scan setting ) , and avoids any conflict with AVG trying to scan any files that may be in use. And it's worth remembering that AVG 8 is scanning for viruses AND spyware. If you were to use separate antivirus and antispyware apps and add up the time they both take i don't think you'd find a great deal of difference to AVG's scanning time.
I've been using AVG8 since day 1 and the only problem at the moment is the link scanner. This does slow down the opening of your search results whilst it deems what is safe and what's not. AVG are working on this and will provide a fix via their updates but in the meantime you may want to do as I've done and disable the link scanner and use... Macafee's site advisor...in it's place.

Hi there Davidina!
Yes, Spybot S&D is one of the security programs that AV8 8.0 conflicts with, and it's also prone to flagging up thousands of "false positives" if you have your PC immunised by anti-spyware programs. I'm personally not a fan, after horrendous problems with 2 different security programs which locked up my system so badly, I couldn't even uninstall it normally!
If you're considering a different (free) Anti Virus, I'd suggest Avast 4.8. For one thing, if you use an instant messenger, Avast monitors this for problems. It's got a built in anti-rootkit scanner. It's also surprisingly light on resources, during a scan (ie, it won't tie up your machine!) and scans reasonably quickly. And it has a handy little option called VRDB. (virus recovery database) Using this, allows Avast to attempt to recover virus damaged files in the event something gets through and caused problems on your PC!
To sum up what would otherwise be a very long post, Avast has a large array of options, and it's well worth looking through them all to really get the most out of it. And yes, Spybot S&D works perfectly with it, up to version 1.5.2. (I haven't installed version 1.6 yet). No conflicts whatsoever!
One other thing. When uninstalling AVG 8.0 please use an uninstalling program like Revo uninstaller (www.revouninstaller.com) because AVG leaves behind quite a bit of junk with it's own uninstaller!
Hope that helps!
