If you want to speed up your Firefox startup times you might want to check out Firefox Preloader.

It works for me.

This was written back in Feb 08 during Firefox 2's reign.

Is it still required for Firefox 3, or compatible?

I am running Firefox 3 and provides a noticeable increase in the startup time.
