Really struggle with Vista. Have tried for about 4 months to get used to it. Hate with a passion the Windows media section. Cannot get used to it
I am all for taking Vista off and reinstalling XP - what (if any) is the argument against doing this
One friend said Vista comes with lots of protection - firewalls etc that I don't know anything about and I would need to get installed on XP. is this a factor?
Your comments/thoughts/opinions would be very helpful

If you really want Vista to look like XP it's reasonably easy to do so. You just disable all the bells and whistles like the Sidebar and UAC. I certainly wouldn't replace Vista with XP, that's just a retrograde step. In any case Vista itself is simply an operating system. It controls the computer, not the person operating the computer. It should be virtually invisible whilst you are using the PC for it's normal purpose.

sorry I am a real novice - UAC? And can you advise how to do this - remove all these parts so they look like XP. Cheers

UAC - User Account Control. It's the thing that pops up and asks you if you are sure you want to install a programme. Have a look at this for some ideas. In particular look at the bit entitled 'Turn off visual effects'. There are other things you can do but try those first.

Read this and follow his advice.
Having done so myself I can tell you I have Vista Ultimate running as fast as XP used to, yet my PC is a 1.8Ghz single core, with 1Gb of RAM. I also only have a 64 Mb graphics card, and I'm not using Ready Boost either!
