I tried to use my Acer Travelmate laptop in a hotel in Dover recently, which had a Wi-fi free service. Wouldn't connect at all. The hotel manager did a few things to my laptop (which I haven't a clue about, being a 70 year old novice) and now that I am back at home, I cannot get my laptop to connect to my Wireless Router at all in my home. Previously it connected at home most of the time - just occasionally failing to make a connection, or losing the connection briefly. Can someone explain in very basic steps what I should do to regain my wireless connection at home please? and also, how does one get a wireless connection in these free Wi-Fi hotspots now. Is there one simple thing to access Wi-Fi everywhere please?

Click on Start, Run, type in cmd and click OK. Then in the resultant DOS box type in IPCONFIG /ALL (note the space after config) and then press the Enter key. Tell us the heading name for each section and then the numbers against IP Address, Sub NetMask and DHCP Server and if DHCP Enabled shows Yes or No.

Hello and thanks for replying. HOWEVER... ... I did what you said, but up came a black page which didn't sound like what you were expecting. The first heading said "Windows IP configuration" then Host Name ............. travelmate Primary DNS Suffix ........- then node Type .....broadcast, then IP Routing Enabled ..NO and WINS Proxy Enabled ...NO
After that another heading "Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection, then Media State ...Media disconnected, then Description ..Broadcast 440 x 10/100 Integrated Cont
There was a bit more, but nothing that sounded remotely like what you were expecting. and since I am a total novice, I haven't a clue.
It will have to be off to PC World I think
Absolutely not a clue what's happening. Daren't touch anything else ............

The black page is exactly what you should have got.
Under Ethernet adaptor Local Area Connection there should be DHCP Enabled which will be yes or no then IP Address with a number something like 192.168.0.1 then Subnet Mask and DHCP server with numbers.
The last place you want to go to is PCWorld. I'm sure we can sort it out between us.

Does that mean you are currently connected to the net via wireless or are you using a different PC to send these messages?

Good morning - sorry for the long delay in the reply.
I am using my Compaq PC to send these messages, not the Acer Laptop that I am struggling with.
I played about with the laptop a bit last night, and at one point got connected to "someone's" network (an unsecured one) but this morning still nothing. We have a wireless connection on the 2 PC's in our house, and on and off I have always had problems holding the connection. This has gone on for ages. Some days the laptop would "find" the connection, other days not - even if I was using the laptop in the same room as my Wireless Router and PC. It has always been a complete mystery to me.
However, I would love to be able to just connect to these free Wi-Fi hotspots when I am travelling - that would help.
Looking forward to hearing from you again - and again, sorry for the long delay (it WAS Friday after all!!).

Right. The first thing we need to do is connect your laptop to the router using an ethernet cable. Next run the same command as before (IPCONFIG /ALL) and then tell me what you see under Local Area Connection.

Did you not get one with the router? They normally supply one. How did you set up the router in the first place without such a cable? Unfortunately that means buying one and I would suggest Tesco or Asda will have one in their electronics area.

Yes, probably did get one supplied - but some young computer-expert guys set everything up for us, and they have now moved away to Manchester. We are in the dark I'm afraid! (That was why I mentioned going to PC World originally). Will be in touch if I get a cable, and then of course there is the snag of not knowing where to plug it in. Honestly, we are complete novices in our house! (Both past our sell-by date!)

Hello again - I have now got the cable connected to the laptop and went back to what you requested on the first reply. Typed in IPCONFIG /ALL and this is what I get:-
IP address : 192-168-2-4 SubNet Mask : 255-255-255-0 DCHP Server: 192.168.2.1 DCHP Enabled : Yes
The headings in each section are:
Ethernet Local Area Connection roller Ethernet adapter Wireless Net Connection Connection
Do you need absolutely everything that this black page showed? There is an awful lot of other text!
really appreciate all your help so far . Thanks.

I now need to know the make and model number of your router. I guess it's a Belkin but I need the rest. Can I assume that with the laptop connected to the router with a cable you are able to surf the net quite happily via the laptop.

Hello - All I can find is the sort-of picture leaflet (idiot's guide) to set up the router. It says:- Belkin ADSL Modem with Wireless G router
and at the bottom there is 802.11g and 54 Mbps then 2.4GHz. Wireless
Oh, we have just found this on the bottom of the Router, in VERY small print:- MODEL NUMBER F507632-4
I do hope this will help. You are so kind, going to all this trouble.

So sorry - just realised that I hadn't answered the part about the laptop connecting to the internet via the ethernet cable. Yes I guess it WAS conected OK, as I sent my reply with all those numbers (Subnet Mask/ IP address etc) whilst the ethernet cable was connected to the laptop.
Now not using the laptop - the ethernet cable is used to connect PC No. 2, as we have a very iffy wireless connection at the best of times. PC No. 2 is used for serious office-work, and we use the ethernet cable on it to avoid losing the signal on important work items. I am presently using PC No. 1, which is using the Belking 54G Wireless Router. (This PC No. 1 is my plaything!!)

Sorry to butt in, but methinks that may well be F5D7632-4 rather than F507632-4

It really is very, very small print, and also very hard to read it under the base of the router. I would expect that you are right - thanks anyway. All help very gratefully received. We are totally lost here!

Ok can you do me a favour, davidina?
With one or other of the PCs connected to the router, can you open internet explorer, and in the address bar type in 192.168.2.1 and press enter
note the dots
You should have a screen looking like this

Could you tell me the contents that are highlighted in red on your router ?
