Hey that rhymed Anyway, we are getting a wireless router soon so I can be on the PC and my mum can use a laptop. What good security is there to stop people tapping into the signal? I didn't even know this was possible till I saw a programme called 'The Real Hustle'
Is there anyway to stop this sort of thing? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgBHjZUKW54
A few things are mentioned in the video of what to do, but I haven't got it set up yet as we are waiting for our router to arrive, so will (what they said to do) be obvious how to do it AND is what they said to do the right advice?
Thanks :-)

The level of security will depend on two things 1. The router 2. The laptop
The router should and most likely will have the latest in wireless encryption technology, WPA2, so the strength of your encryption will dependent on the type of encryption that the laptop uses.
A good wireless encryption key consists of a password of in excess of 14 random characters or a passphrase of 5 or more randomly chosen words, and in theory should be virtually uncrackable, certainly in terms of what a cracker has time to do or considers worth doing. Home networks are not high on their agenda!
If you could post what router and laptop you have, we can determine what level of security you will be capable of achieving

Ok, hope I wrote down the right bits of info.
Wireless Router: AOL ST585 Laptop: HP G6000 OR HP G6062EA (I can't be sure which one it is unfortunatly, both are on the box)
Hope that helps

Ok, the Router, a thomson Speedtouch 585 is WPA-PSK enabled, as is your G6062EA
Click on the links for the manuals for both devices to set them up for a wireless connection

So aside from setting them up, I don't actually have to enable security, because it's already on there. Have I got that right? Or were you telling me to set it up so you could tell me what to do next?
Either way, thanks :-)

Once you have set it up, you will be secure from drive by or localised piggybacking of your network.
Obviously, you still need your firewall and AV programs, but otherwise you have nothing else to do.
