How Can I Use Xbox 360 Controller (works With PC) Headset For Chatting in chat rooms
      #398157 - Fri Jun 20 2008 10:13 PM

Can some one please tell me is their a software I can use to for my xbox 360 controller for my windows XP PC (has a usb 2.0 so it works with PC) that lets me chat with others using the headset that plugs into the xbox 360 controller? If their isn't any then is it possible using some other method for chatting online using my headset? About the headset: it allows gamers to use in game voice chat, private chat, audio for video chat and in-game voice recognition for Xbox Live. (So i want to do the same thing on a PC but without playing a game like using the headset to chat on windows messenger, yahoo messenger, etc)

Go to this page, download the software for your version of Windows. Also choose wired or wireless.

install the software

Now plug in your controller, but not the headset and let Windows do the rest

Once the controller is installed, plug your headset into the controller and the headset should be recognised as a USB headset.

Once that is installed, it will show as an option in Messenger etc

Have you tried this yourself? Also, the wired controller is already installed and recognized so will that do any good (only want one for voice chat since that is the only thing that doesn't work)?

You had me confused as you originally asked for voice chat "that lets me chat with others using the headset that plugs into the xbox 360 controller" which can be done on messenger like being on the phone, hence there is no need for speech to text. However, what you are wanting is the voice recognition built into XP, follow the instructions here

Be warned, it can take two or three hours to set it up and train the computer to recognise your voice, and then it will still get it wrong

Why do you say "then it will still get it wrong" have you tried that yourself. Also, the link you gave me to configure speech recognition in Windows XP requires Office XP. Therefore, is their another way i can get it to work?

Yes, I have. Voice recognition is, despite efforts still in it's infancy. It has serious trouble understanding context and frequently confuses words of similar sounds but different spellings; tear, tier; where, and wear, etc.

Not only that, it struggles with dialect. Any slight variation, even with training, can lead the program up a garden path so long, you'll end up typing it all out.

All the speech software manufacturers make claims about the accuracy, but I have yet to find one that does what it says on the tin with an accuracy of more than 60%, which means I am spending almost as much time correcting it as I am speaking.

Can you please tell me when have you tried because it might have improved significantly the last time you tried.

Also, the link you gave me doesn't mention any review just talks about "Get Speech Recognition Working in Windows XP". So maybe you gave me the wrong link or something

About a year and a half ago in the vain hope that it had improved since the introduction in Office 2000, however, it appears no better

You'll find that there are several urls, http://www.microsoft.com/speech/download/sdk51 amongst them

Windowsitpro don't do clickable links you have do some work yourself
