Hi - it's been a while since I sought help here so I would just be grateful if anyone could confirm my assumptions on some problems I am having with my laptop.
I currently have no display showing on the laptop. But connecting it to a external monitor confirms that all is OK with the mobo. Assumption therefore is that the graphics card is Ok and actual display on lappy in broken
Similarly, I get no sound from the integral speakers (none at all - no bios beeps, no Vista signatures, no nothing) but have full stereo through the headphone jack. Assumption is that the integral speakers are knackered - sound card etc OK.
Device manager reports all is working properly.
PC is a HP PAvillion, Vista Home Prem, SP1 (installed with no issues).
Thanks for any help or advice that follows.

It's a dv6285eu.
I would take the back off but I'm not too familiar with laptop architecture. Looks to me that I need to remove the battery, RAM and HDD before I can get to the mobo and the connectors.

Right - took the plunge and opened it up.
Found that the display connector rather than the ribbon that was loose A quick press back into place has returned the display to normal.
Still no sounds though

same principle but the cable will be considerably smaller, does the headphone socket work?

btw here is the maintenance and repair guide There is a speaker assembly, which as a small wire attached, may have been unplugged

Thanks for the service guide.
Yes I do have perfect sound via the headphone jack - so drivers and codecs seem to be OK. I had taken the speaker assembly apart earlier today but couldn't find much wrong with the connections - but I'd solved the more pressing problem around the display I didn't spend a lot of time on it. I'll take another look once I've taken a look at the manual.

The fact that you have headphone sound does lead me to believe there is a cable unattached

Puta
I've taken another look and the ribbons that run across the back of the unit (under the keyboard to the power switch board and led display) - both look OK. I've also disconnected, removed, cleaned and reconnected the speakers but still no sound.
So where I've go to is: replace the power switch board as it was playing up anyway - have been having to boot the system using the quickplay touch buttons along the bottom of the speaker grille to save pushing my finger through the unit due to the pressure required to get the power button to work. If by chance the current board has a problem with the connections out to the speakers i'll be OK otherwise it looks like I'll need a new speaker assembly.

To be honest, I wouldn't bother you should be able to use the headphone socket as a makeshift speaker socket.

If it were only me using it I would agree and use some head phones, but it's used by the whole family in different places around the house so not really practical to have speakers attached all the time.
I'll let you how I get on.

If it is being used purely as a glorified MP3 player, I would be tempted to plug in an FM tranmitter and broadcast around the house rather than cart the lappie around

Nnnnooooo! Stop being so helpful!
Having taken a look at your piccies I thought these might interest you. Some are very similar in style to yours. Taken by my 'bro in law' - One Del
