I need to share the Address Book on PC on my network so someone else can work on it on my laptop. I'm using IE7/Outlook Express in Windows XP. I read on the web today that this can be tricky. I was just going to find the WAB file in Windows, share it and access it on the other computer. Then any changes we make to it on the laptop will update on the PC. Is that not the case? Anybody know?

It is not recommended that two users try to access the address book at the same time, as it will almost invariably get corrupted. It is preferable to create a standalone.wab which can be shared by many users. See this page for more infomation, in particular, The Standalone WAB and Multiple WABs

I presume the standalone wab involves making a copy of the original wab, then save it in, say in my documents so it can be found easily, someone can then log in and work on that without any trouble. If I want then to use that wab in outlook express, could I overwrite the original wab with the standalone one?
Alternatively, what if I was to share the main wab and ensure I definitely don't try to open it whilst someone is working on it, surely that would be ok wouldn't it? Are you certain it could be opened on both computers at the same time? I always thought you get a messsage indicating that when the file is open, it cannot be opened on another pc. I'm sure it does that with other files I've shared on my network. What do you think?

To your first part, yes, and to be honest if I was to do it that would be the way I would do it, I ceratinly wouldn't be tempted to share.
However, I would consider installing a LDAP(Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) server, such as openLDAP then configure outlook express to access the directory. However I haven't tried it on a home network, but I cannot see any reason for it not to work
