I wonder if anybody can help me, I have just bought a new Acer Travelmate 6292 laptop with Vista Home Premium and a 60 days free trial of Microsoft Office 2007 pre-installed, I have the discs for Microsoft Office 2003 Professional, so I have uninstalled the free trial and installed Office 2003. Everything is working well except Outlook, I get an error message 'Cannot start Microsoft Office.MAP132.dll is corrupt or the wrong version. This could have been caused by installing other messaging software. Please re-install Outlook'. I have done this and still get the same error message. I have also installed this Office 2003 onto my daughter's laptop with Vista, but no free trial, and all works perfectly. Could there be a conflict between the 2003 and 2007 versions, even though I thought I had uninstalled the trial version? Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks for the link, it looks very daunting, especially when it comes to registry editing. As all the functions of Office 2003 are working except Outlook, do you know a good free e-mail program I could use instead of Outlook?

Thanks for the recommendation. Would you expect there to be any conflict problems with either Office 2003 or what is left of 2007 on my computer?

Thanks again. Just a thought, do you think Office 2003 Outlook would work if I installed it on my D: drive?

Try this first:
Close all Outlook windows/instances.
Click Start | Find | Files or Folders.
Type Mapi32.dll in the Named box.
In Look In, click My Computer and click Find Now.
Right-click to select Mapi32.dll in the search results list.
Click Rename, type Mapi32.old, and press ENTER to accept the name change. If there are multiple copies of Mapi32.dll in the list, rename each.
Close the Find Files window and start Outlook. When you start Outlook, it checks for the existence of necessary files.
In the case of Mapi32.dll, if it is not present at startup, Mapistub.dll is used. If for any reason Mapistub.dll cannot be found, Setup automatically attempts to replace both files.
NOTE: When you start Outlook and receive a prompt that files are missing, click Yes to allow Windows Installer to replace them.

I'm new to Vista OS, after I press 'start' I can't see 'find', it has 'start search' in a box, but nothing happens if I type 'find' or 'files or folders'. Do you know what I should do in Vista? I hope I'm not being thick.

No you're not being thick, I just assume, and I know I shouldn't that most people still don't use vista.
click the Start button and then begin typing the name of the file in the search box. As soon as you type the first letter, the Search engine immediately begins compiling a list of applications, folders, and documents that begin with that letter and displays them in a categorised list right on top of the Start menu, which instantly converts itself into the search results pane, as shown in the picture below. As you type more letters it narrows it down further

I wish I had XP, this Vista is so complicated, anyway. I have found 4 files through c:\windows\system32, 2 x mapi32.dll.mui and 2 x mapi32.dll, I right clicked on the first to rename, renamed it and Vista will not let me change it, it says 'you need permission to perform this action'. So I re-entered mapi32.dll and right clicked on it and clicked 'properties', clicked the security tab and 'edit' to change 'group or user name' from 'system' to 'trusted installer', which changed the 'permissions' to allow 'full control', clicked OK and went back and nothing had changed. Vista will not let me change the user from 'system' to 'trusted installer'. Do you know what to do? I'm sorry it's so long.

Try this, get control and ownership
To take full ownership:
Right click file, click properties. Click security tab, select advanced Click owner tab, click edit (accept the UAC pop-up box) Select your username, click OK, accept the pop up box, then OK out of all dialogue boxes
To take full control
Right click file, click properties. Click security tab, then click on your username. click edit, then click on your username on the pop up screen Check the box marked full control under the allow heading Click OK all the way out
Do that for each of the 4 files and rename them

I have done everything you said and have renamed the mapi32.dll and mapi32.dll.mui files to old. When I looked before there were 2 of each file, I have renamed one of each and cannot find the other 2. When I enter mapi32.dll or mapi32.dll.mui both searches come back with 'nothing matches the search'. So I assume everything has gone. On starting Outlook I get the same error message as before 'Cannot start Office outlook mapi32.dll is corrupt or the wrong version etc.' I rebooted to see if that helped, but the same message appeared. Do you think there is anything else to do?

I have un-installed and re-installed Office 2003, unfortunately I get the same error message 'Cannot start Microsoft Outlook mapi32.dll is corrupt or the wrong version etc..' On searching the mapi32.dll.old is all that appears. Is this the end of the road? What about installing on my D: drive, do you think that would work? After my introduction to Vista, I am not at all happy with it, do you know anything about changing it to XP, I have the reinstallation CD from my Dell PC. Thanks again for all your help.

No, because Outlook still install loads to the registry
try this, go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033
Find msmapi32.dll, give yourself the relevant permissions as before and rename the msmapi file to msmapi32.old
then restart outlook

Success, you have done it, Outlook is now working. I cannot thank you enough for your expertise and your patience. Many thanks. Do you know anything about changing Vista to XP using my reinstallation CD from Dell?

The Recovery CD you have for your Dell PC is machine specific, it cannot be used to install XP on another PC. If you really must go backwards ( a bit silly in my opinion having bought a new PC with Vista on on it) then the cheapest option I can find is here. You would have to boot up the laptop with the XP CD, delete all the existing partitions, create a new one, format it and then install XP.

Perhaps you are right, maybe I need to stick with Vista for a while to see how it goes. I have been put off it during the process of trying to delete the files, it seems to be far more complicated than XP if you want to change things. Thanks for the advise.

Well done you, you did it, I just told you how
I'm with greysts that you should persevere. Vista's only as bad as you want. I remember when XP first came out there were the same calls to revert to windows 98.
As it happens, it's managed to keep micro$oft at the top of the tree by some considerable margin. So no doubt when Windows 7 hits the streets in 2010 (Micro$oft date), 2011 judging by their past poor guesstimates, you'll be able to upgrade!
