HELP Bought computer in Feb. going fine till installing SP1. All updates were automatic but this one was optional. Took advice from a computer expert and was told it would be fine to download. Things took a turn for the worse. Contacted Medion (Manufacturer) Told not to use automatic updates at all. This surely isn't right. Can anybody advise please.

Any company that says you shouldn't use automatic updating for windows should be ashamed of themselves. Optional updates are just that, optional the user must decided if they need them or not but I always use automatic updating for the rest.
As regard sp1, I have windows ultimate 32bit edition and installed sp1 with no issues whatsoever, well apart from the long install time, so if you could post what problems your having then maybe an other member of our community will be able to help.

Hi,
I agree with Ray as regards automatic updates. Your best method for installing SP1 is to download the 'Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone' version and save it to a CD. You can then install from there. A link to this is given below. If you cannot click directly on this link, copy the link into your browser. Dwarf

No it's not right . It's advisable to download and install all "high priority" updates , but , as you've found to your cost , an "informed" decision has to be made on the "optional" ones. I've refused quite a few optional updates as I've decided/known they're not required , eg driver update for C-Media AC97 Audio Device. Once that decisions made i then choose the option for the update not to be shown again.
In the case of SP1 , it's strongly recommended that "windows update" is used to install and download this as , and i quote , "Windows Update will recognize PCs with known problematic drivers and postpone downloading Windows Vista SP1 until the PC has updated drivers or other applicable updates. Using Windows Update will help ensure you have the most trouble-free update experience possible".
If , as Dwarf has suggested , you choose to install Windows Vista SP1 via the standalone installer available on the Microsoft Download Center, Microsoft advises that you first visit Windows Update and install all optional drivers. Read Knowledge Base Articles 948187 and 948343 for more information.
Things you need to know before downloading SP1
Unfortunately this information comes to late to prevent your problems but as I've said i strongly advise you use the option for automatic updates.

Thanks for your adviceI couldn't understand the reason for not installing any updates and I have asked two different people on the help line to Medion and they both said definitely not to use automatic updates!! Having said this when I bought the computer in February it was set up to use them. Very strange. When I downloaded and installed SP1 it was done very quickly not like you said taking a long time. If I don't install it what are the consequences if any? Thanks again Ray.

Thanks fifeflyer
Am going to read your reply a few times and take in what you have said. I am unsure as to whether to bother with SP1. Especially when Medion said this was the cause of my probs. I did look into Microsoft forum on SP1 before I installed and there where a lot of people who had probs after installation but just as many who were ha-ppy with it. As I said I took advice from someone reliable probably like yourself who said go ahead and two weeks down the line I began having problems and the only thing I had done different was to download SP1.
Thanks again it is good to know people like you are around to advise. Regards Maureen
