A friend of mine had her computer fixed by a computer technician this week When she got it back and switched on she discovered he'd wiped everything. No documents left and NO PICTURES When she asked him about it he told her that everything on the machine was corrupt and he couldn't save anything.
She's really upset that he didn't tell her first before he went ahead and wiped everything as she feels surely he could have saved the photos?
Someone else told her that if the police can retrieve apparently 'wiped' data from discs, there must be software available that can retrieve things like these 'wiped' photos.
As long as not too much data has gone on it maybe possible, however, you may find that a large percentage cannot be recovered.
The first thing to do is not to turn on the machine as new files are created and this will overwrite data.
The software that the authorities use is expensive, and not always available to the public. There are data recovery firms who may be able to do the job, but obviously charge for the service, and certainly won't guarantee 100% success.
Certainly a lesson learned on the importance of backing up

If your friends computer as been reformated then like putasolutions says there is little hope of retrieving the lost data. You could I suppose try Recuva from HERE you never know you may be lucky. Sounds like he was a really good "Technician"
