Ebay account blocked (but fees aren't mine)
      #395597 - Thu May 29 2008 06:20 PM

I really don't know what to do.

Ebay have blocked my account for alleged non-payment of fees, relating to March this year. However, I have not listed anything on Ebay since late 2006, and trying to get this through to Ebay is like banging my head against a brick wall.

They've asked me to review my account summary, which I can't do as the only part of my account which I can access due to the account being blocked is my messages.

Also, having been given the list of items which I've allegedly listed, and have nearly £20 unpaid fees for, I know that these are nothing to do with me.

Has anybody else had this kind of problem, and how did they resolve it? I know I could just pay and it'll be sorted, but I have a real issue paying for fees that I know aren't mine. And I'm certain that my account hasn't been used fraudulently, as I've never received the customary 'listing confirmed' email when the listings were made (had I received it, I would have questioned it straight away).

I am very concerned, as I have heard stories of Ebay getting debt collectors involved, but trying to get it though to them that these listings were never made by me is proving impossible.

The other thing is I can't actually see the listings, despite them allegdly being less than 90 days old (according to the messages I received from Ebay, they were listed between the 11th and 17 of March.

OMG.....

I've just used Goofbay (as seen on here) and somebody has been using my account......but how??

I never received the confirmation email from Ebay to say that these items has been listed.

I'm worried as to how somebody could have gained my login details as I know for damned sure I didn't list these items.

EBay Help show this section:

http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/account/reinstate-billing.html

The one thing to remember is that eBay take a while to respond and sort things out, so try not to bombard them with messages, even though the temptation is great.

However you should get a response roughly within 48 hours even if automated. Explain your situation and ask for the listing details - numbers etc.

If you look at the next Help guide:

http://www2.ebay.com/aw/uk/200804210855122.html

click on the update your contact information link and see what is there. Is that your email address etc?

You obviously need to stress that you feel your account has been hijacked - eBay are bringing in the following to try to stop this:

http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/confidence/identity-confirmation.html

Of course the one course of action you might have to consider is paying up THEN fighting it. At least then it may help you further, but see what they come back with first. They are unlikely to go full speed ahead for 20 quid, so you should have time to see what happens.

Thanks for the quick response.

I can't actually check any of my information as my account is blocked. The only thing I can do is read/write messages and pay fees.

I've sent an email to them stressing that I never listed the items, and that somebody has used my account fraudulently. I'll have to see where that gets me, but I have asked if there is any chance the fees can be written off as a gesture of goodwill.

One item, listed and then re-listed twice was up for a price of £6,700 and another was listed once at a price of £1718.98. No wonder the fees are so much!

Hopefully they can look at that and see that historically I've only done much lower value transactions (and nothing was in even a similar categories to these items) and realise that something is amiss with this.

For a scam to work (and I haven't done one, so don't worry) I'd imagine they need to have the emails redirected to them and also have a different address available to buyers. Point this out to eBay to check the details with the listings. I once got caught when I replied to an eBay email, only it wasn't, was it?

Within the next 24 hours my account sent out the maximum number of emails it could to people bidding on electrical goods in the US offering them cheaper alternatives. Although the email contained instructions to the buyer to not reply to the email, but to a link in it, some did (most asking me what I could offer!).

Anyway, I told eBay and within hours my account was sorted. I was quite impressed.

The thing to bear in mind is that at the minute to eBay you DO owe the money. Annoyance and anger should be directed at the person pulling the scam. Try to work with eBay and see what happens.

Well, it has to be said that Ebay have been VERY good.

They've admitted that the listings were made by an unauthorised third party. It took them two attempts to clear all the listings, and there was still 1p in fees not cleared, but I had 7p in my Paypal account so just used that to clear the penny.

Well, fair play to Ebay. They investigated it properly, and got it resolved, so I'm happy. Now to secure my account so this can't happen again!

I'm actually glad you came back, Kev, with a positive about eBay because I have also found them very good in situations like this. The biggest issue is we all rant and rave for twenty minutes when it happens - but from eBay's viewpoint YOU did the listings, until they get the facts in.

Top marks for you for sticking with it and proving the system does work.

On another viewpoint, some may remember I pointed out in a post about a 14 year old running a business on eBay (age limit 18) with a unconfirmed PayPal business account (18 also). They have done nothing and three months on he has 66 feedbacks, ten of which in the last month are negs. Reason? He has gone back to school and is sitting his mocks I suspect!

But that is eBay. You and I do not know how many malicious reports they get every day and have a hard time chasing.

For me, they dealt with my account message hijack quickly, and every time someone nicks a photo or a description they are like lightning.

As it's been said before, it's all in the comms. You get better results that way.
