wireless network
      #395562 - Thu May 29 2008 12:42 PM

Hi there, I have a laptop with vista and a Dlink DSL-G624T router working brilliantly. I also have a pc using windowsXP with a DWL-G122 wireless USB adapter, which is out of range. I have bought a Dlink DWL-G710 range extender (which claimed to be easy to set up) and followed all the instuctions. Nothing happened. I asked madasafish for a static IP address because other web sites seemed to point to this as a solution, but I dont know what to do now!!
Please help,

If you're out of range a static IP address won't make any difference. First thing to find out is if your laptop can actually see a signal from the range extender. We'll worry about connecting to it later.

Hi again, sorry for the delay, I've been at work.
Its the B1 option.
I went back through the instructions and cant log in to the page when I type 192.168.0.30 - internet explorer just wont go to it.
My range extender is flashing away on the table next to me, just totally doing my head in!!!
Thanks for your help,

Have you connected the range extender direct to your PC with an ethernet cable?

If you want to setup your extender you will have to do it from whatever machine is connected to it. If that's the laptop then it's the laptop you'll have to use.

yes. I just didnt want to get (any more) confused, so thought it best to clarify.
My laptop sees the extender as "unidentified network" but i cant log in to the thing to alter anything. Tried re setting it a thousand times yesterday.
Excellent signal!!

Let's check we're looking at the same thing. Click this link for the Quick Setup Guide. Is that the right machine?

In Spencer's absence, have you given your network connection a static ip address? You mentioned a static ip address in your first post, but I think you got a bit confused and thought it meant from your ISP.

The quick start guide does tell you to look at the guide in the manual on your CD.

However, there are some good instaructions here <------ Click me

The ip address to use should be something like 192.168.0.2 and the subnet mask 255.255.255.0

Don't worry about the default gateway and DNS Server bit.

I'm really sorry, but I just don't get what I'm supposed to change.
I think I must be needing a Total Idiots Guide???

Ritchie's guide explains how to do it but if you look at the link I gave you to the Quick Installation Guide you will see this
Quote:

You will need to assign your computer a Static IP address within the same range as the DWL-G710’s IP address for the purpose of configuring the DWL-G710.

See the Manual on the CD-ROM if you need assistance in assigning a Static IP address for your network adapter

At the moment your laptop is configured to get an IP address from your ISP. This will be a random address selected by the ISP when you first log on. When you've got your booster connected to the laptop, it can't actually get an IP address that way so you have to give the laptop a permanent address as explained in the manual. I haven't got a copy of the manual but I would gues it says you revert to a random address via DHCP after you've finished configuring the booster.
