HijackThis log (where's the worm?)
      #395544 - Thu May 29 2008 02:49 AM

Dear wonderful people... help please!

I have AntiVir Guard on my PC. Yesterday (but not, strangely, today!) it kept popping up with a warning that a "Virus or Unwanted Program was found" -- WORM/Pykse.M.1 (It won't let me view exactly where it is, but the partial address showing is C:\Program Files\...\symlcsvc.exe )

AntiVir pops up and allows me the options of "Move to Quarantine," "Delete," "Ignore," or "Open." When I clicked "Move to Quarantine" it repeatedly required about 3 to 5 pop ups (repeated every time I switched the puter on), then it waited a few minutes and popped up again. Soooo... apparently, it wasn't dealing with it. Yet today there've been NO pop-ups, no warnings, no sign of it... only the PC going excessively S L O W L Y...

Having frantically googled, I discovered that a) Pykse is apparently transmitted via SKYPE... BUT I don't HAVE Skype on this PC!!!!! and b) that I needed to download HijackThis from Trend. Which I've done: herewith the log.

Re., the log: I notice that the penultimate line of it has something to do with Symantec... but as far as I know... there is nothing from Symantec on this PC any more...?
Also, I switched the "Set Restore Points" back ON last night (I'd switched them off for a few hours after reading somewhere that it was necessary) - do I need to switch it back off again?

Thank you... and ... help!

PS.... Pretty please.... if you CAN help, would you give any instructions in REALLY basic steps? You know, the sort you'd need to talk a three-year-old through it...? I've carefully & attentively read all those warnings about one false step and am now duly & truly terrified that I will make the problem worse by not having a clue (let alone fully understanding!) 'bout what I'm supposed to do. Using puters - great. Understanding what I'm supposed to do when it comes to worms, viruses, trojans, etc... urk, yikes, nope, only panic!

So herewith this evening's log:

Welcome to the Webuser forum.

Rerun HJT,and put a checkmark beside these :-

O23 - Service: Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe
O23 - Service: LiveUpdate - Symantec Corporation - C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\LIVEUP~1\LUCOMS~1.EXE
O23 - Service: Symantec Core LC - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe (file missing)

now close all windows and browsers and click FIX CHECKED

then :-

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Thanks soooo much, Bricat. Have followed your steps millimetre for millimetre, HOPEFULLY without overlooking anything!!! and am currently waiting for the quick scan to finish.... Will get back to you once whole process finished - but meanwhile, just to check - ought I to have disabled the "restore points" bit of windows before I ran the scan, or can it cope with any files hidden there and/or in the quarantine sections of the AntiVir programme?

(baffled) Puter still running extraordinarily SLOWLY - ever since that day of announcing it had been infected with Ye Worm - but according to Malwarebyte, nothing is actually wrong??

So WHY did it keep on announcing the worm, WHY did the worm "disappear", and WHY is the puter now running so slowly??
Am feeling confuuuuuused....! So... what do I do now?

you shouldn't have disabled system restore until you were sure you were clean, an infected restore point is better than having none. i advise you not to shut down system restore, if anything goes seriously wrong it means you have a point to go back to.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  2. Close any open browsers.
  3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

  4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Dear Bricat - it's trying to change the name of Combofix all by itself, and then informing me that that's not possible, closing itself down, and presumably I now have to re-download it...!? *sigh*!! How can I stop it trying to change its name without my knowledge?

Hi Bricat! This evening I succeeded in saving it without probs and without changing the name - I suspect that my mistake last night was in trying to "RUN" it instead of "SAVE" it?
At any rate, herewith now the new ComboFix log. The HijackThis one is below it. Thanks again soooo much for all your help, Bricat: really appreciate it. Does this mean that my system is now sparkly clean from EVERYthing potentially nasty??

there is no sign of any malware on your computer.

Download and scan with CCleaner
  1. CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.
  2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
    Then select "Cookies"
Move any cookies you wish to retain, e.g. login cookies, in the left-hand window to the right-hand window by highlighting them and clicking the right arrow in the centre.

  3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.
    In the Windows Tab:

    • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
    • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
    • Clean all entries in the "System" section.
    • Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
    • Clean any others that you choose.

    In the Applications Tab:

    • Clean all entries in the Mozilla Firefox Section.
    • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
    • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
    • Clean any others that you choose.

  4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
  5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
  7. Click "exit" when done.

then DEFRAG your C:\ drive.

to help speed up your system.

then let us know how the computer is running.

Hi Bricat... Can't find ccleaner. Keep on getting www.onspeedsearch instead. , with the message that: "Sorry, we couldn't find http://72.52.220.46 , or this domain does not exist. Here are some related websites:" which bear no relation to anything...
:-S
I tried again today but same story...

Download the HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager.
  • Unzip HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager
  • Run HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager from its new home
  • Click on "File Handling".
  • Click on "Restore MS Hosts File".
  • Click OK on the Confirmation box.
  • Click on "Make Read Only?"
  • Click the X to exit the program.
  • Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

Then :-

Please download and install SUPERAntiSpyware Home Edition (free)
  • Once installed, update the program definitions when prompted.
  • Click the "Preferences" button and then the "Scanning Control" tab.
  • Under "Scanner Options" make sure the following are checked/selected:
  • 1>> Close browsers before scanning.
  • 2>> Scan for tracking cookies.
  • 3>> Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • 4>> Ignore System Restore/Volume Information on ME and XP.
  • Deselect all other scanning options.
  • Close SUPERAntiSpyware for use later.

Then boot up in SAFE MODE

Open SUPERAntiSpyware and click the "Scan your computer" button.
  • On the left, select "C:\Fixed Drive".
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose "Perform Complete Scan".
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete a summary box will appear. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything in the white box has a check next to it, then click "Next".
  • After quarantining anything found, you may be prompted to reboot, click "Yes".
  • Paste the scan log in your next reply (Preferences > Statistics/Logs tab > double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log)

then try the link for ccleaner.

can you go to add/remove programs in the control panel and remove ONSPEED.
see if you can get ccleaner. then if you need to have onspeed running you can reinstall it.
