Highjackthis log
      #395524 - Wed May 28 2008 10:26 PM

This is my first post so please be patient if I have made any mistakes!

The other day my computer was running very slowly so I ran my antispyware programs (spybot and superantispyware). Super came up with some references to Vundo-variant so I followed the instructions and it appeared to fix it. I then also downloaded and ran vundofix which did not detect anything, so I presumed all was well. Today when I switched on the pc and ran superantispyware it detected vundo again! So I downloaded highjackthis and this is my log file:

Welcome to the Webuser forum.

Your log looks clean, although you need to update your Java.

Please go to the add/remove utility in the control panel and uninstall the following:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 06 (and any other java updates that are there)

Reboot the Computer.

Then update your Sun java from here:

http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Thanks for your reply .... it was reassuring, but when I run superantispyware I still get the Trojan detected.
I updated Java (to JRE 6 update 6) then ran Superantispyware.
It detected Adware Tracking Cookie in Docs & settings \ myname \ cookies, which isn't really a problem as they are easily removed (but puzzling since most cookies go into temporary internet files).
It also reported Trojan Vundo-Variant / Small located in c:\winnt\system32\prsaxara.dll
Again it was easy to remove but why does it keep coming back? The computer is running ok ... does it really matter (I probably wouldn't even know about it if I hadn't started using Superantispyware ... Spybot doesn't detect it!)
Thanks
Paul

We'll dig a bit deeper.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  2. Close any open browsers.
  3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

  4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Funnily enough when I ran Superantispyware today it didn't report the Vundo trojan, just a few cookies.
Anyway I have done as you said and here is the combofix file followed by the hijackthis log:

Just one thing before I go .... as Combofix was rebooting the computer I got an error box stating that I didn't have enough Registry memory. Is this something I need to fix?

Thanks
Paul

follow these steps and then let me know if you get that error again.

combofix cleanup.

Time for some housekeeping

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
• When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"
The above procedure will:

    • Delete the following:
• ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present

  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.
Then :-

    Download and scan with CCleaner
    1. CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.
    2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
      Then select "Cookies"
Move any cookies you wish to retain, e.g. login cookies, in the left-hand window to the right-hand window by highlighting them and clicking the right arrow in the centre.

    3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.
      In the Windows Tab:

      • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
      • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
      • Clean all entries in the "System" section.
      • Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
      • Clean any others that you choose.

      In the Applications Tab:

      • Clean all entries in the Mozilla Firefox Section.
      • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
      • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
      • Clean any others that you choose.

    4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
    5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
    6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
    7. Click "exit" when done.

    then DEFRAG your C:\ drive.

to help speed up your system.

then let us know how the computer is running.

Ok I have tried to follow your instructions to the letter but you may be interested in the following points:

    1. During the Combofix process my Google Toolbar has disappeared ... should I put it back or do you not recommend this?

    2. During the Combo /u uninstall process my Zone alarm kept popping up warning messages so I just OK'd them. Also I didn't get the disclaimer that you mentioned. Still, it all seemed to work in the end i.e. Combofix has now gone.

    3. I already have Ccleaner and run it frequently, however I only used the default settings so I have now included checks in the advanced section as you recommended.

    4. When I now look at folder settings (i.e. Tools / folders) the choices for hidden folders has changed to NOHIDDEN and SHOWALL (note caps) .... it used to say 'Show hidden folders' and 'Do not show hidden folders'!

Having said all that, the computer is much improved. It seems to be running faster, webpages are loading more quickly, and best of all Superantispyware is not finding Vundo!!
It's a bit early to celebrate (I'll wait a few days first) but it looks like everything is now OK.
Thanks for your time and expertise ... I couldn't have done this myself without help. I'll be hitting the paypal button.
    Thanks again
    Paul

PS Every time I open the Webuser site I get a Charley Banner pop-up from Unicef (it also happens on my computer at work) ... is it happening to everybody?

I'm, not sure where the google toolbar has gone, combofix didn't remove it, install it again if you wish.

as for the Unicef popup i haven't seen it, but i will ask admin.

    happy to help.
