This is now doing my head rowsingin! The display on my laptop is painfully slow to scroll/re-draw when browsing. When I boot the laptop I get a found new hardware bubble "Mobility Radeon 9000".. I have now found & downloaded the ATI driver for this card but when I come to install it I get a message saying it "can't install because no hardware can ne found .. am I sure the hardware is correct"!! So windows detects it when laptop boots but driver wont install because it can't find it... what's going on?

The first question I would ask is why you are being told it's found new hardware when you've not actually changed anything - or have you? Next question is, where did you find the driver? In 99% of cases the best place to get a display driver is from the laptop manufacturers own web site. What's the make and model number of the laptop? Incidentally, just because you've found a driver that appears to be right for your machine it ain't necessarily so. Many laptop makers buy in a graphics chip and then make their own adjustments to it so that a normal driver won't work.

I had to replace the HD and therefore reinstalled Windows XP (as supplied with laptop).

Downloaded driver from manufacturers website (http://support.fujitsu-siemens.com/com/support/downloads.html)

Fujitsu-siemens Amilo D 7830
I have downloaded the driver again and this time it just wont install.. it appears to be incomplete?

You sometimes get that with Zip files - a CRC failure. I've just downloaded it myself from the link you gave and got a Zip file of size 21,348kb. Can you download it again and see if you get the same as me. If it doesn't work I can put the file on my server for you and try the download from there.

I really do appreciate all your help & assistance. I have downloaded the driver again and yes, exactly the same size.. 21,348KB. I have tried to install again but this time i'm getting the following message:
"setup was unable to complete the installation. Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup"

Just another thig to try, but can you get the old hard drive to boot at all? Did you try chkdsk /f /r from a command prompt? If you can get it to boot, you can use Driver Max to export the original driver.

OK OK I can't go any faster! aaaaaaaaaaaagh!

In that case got to Device Manager, right click on the Display Adaptor and choose Uninstall. Then reboot and get to the Setup screen and choose VGA mode. Then try to install the new driver.

greys.. and all.. the saga continues. I have rebooted in VGA mode and downloaded and tried to install the driver.. again no joy. Despite the driver appearing to be sitting in the correct folder the install wizard says its unable to install and to check the path is correct!

I have booted in VGA mode but in Device Manager the Display adapter is shown as Video Controller (VGA Compatible) with a yellow exclamation mark! This device is not configured correctly (Code 1). I really don't know where to go from here.

Has the driver folder you downloaded contain lots of files? If so try going to Device Manager, right click the video adapter and select Update Driver.
Tell it you know the location, rather than automatic, then browse to the downloaded driver folder. Click next and see if it can find the drivers.

Tried the above.. displays: "Setup cannot copy the file ati3d1ag.dll.. ensure that the location specified below is correct, or insert "ATI Technologies Installation DISK (VIDEO)" in the drive you specify".

It probably can't find the file because that download is still zipped. Can you right click on the downloaded file and choose Extract. Make a note of the location and then try Ritchie's method.

The way things are going I might have to start a new thread!! I would try your last suggestion although I am no longer getting a message that the New Hardware - Mobile Radeon 9000 has been found! I am getting a message saying that new hardware - Video Controller - has been found... I can't seem able to install that driver either!! In Device Manager the Video Controller is shown with a "?" but Display Adapter is not even in the list!!! I presume that they are two different things?

They are probably the same thing. Extract the files and try telling the Video Controller to look in that directory.

Well,, I'm totally confused.. it seems the Display Adapter and the Video Controller are one of the same thing! I have deleted everything I have previously downloaded.. removed the hardware from the Device Manager and rebooted. Downloaded the Mobility Radeon 9000 driver from the fujitsu-siemens site, then as you said went to the device manager, right clicked the device and pointed to the previously downloaded driver.. this time it has installed and now is listed correctly in the device manager.. thanks guys as always for all of your help.. my next project is to upgrade the RAM on this machine... watchout for the posts when it all goes wrong!! Cheers again.
