Lycos free hosting
      #395 - Tue Jun 03 2003 09:21 AM

Lycos have just wrecked all the free hosted sites by placing a frame on the whole right side of the pages. It's ruined the looks and feel of everyones sites. I for one have spent months building my site around my members wishes and it's been destroyed in one fail swoop.

Further more for those of us running php (I've got InvisionBoard) message boards, it's completely ruined them aswell as they don't perform properly in frames.

I would strongly suggest that anyone wanting free hosting look elsewhere as this frame sponsered by Google spoils the looks of a site in a big way. People are leaving Lycos in droves and those who were thinking of getting paid hosting from them are now not doing so as they can't be trusted anymore.

I've got a huge job on my hands now getting everything transfered to a new server I can rely on.

Shame on Lycos.

I've got an experimental forum (using phpBB) running on a free Tripod page and the new frame doesn't seem to have had an impact on the way the code works. I would have to agree that it does nothing for the way the sites hosted on it look though. Does anyone know of other free hosts that allow you to run php software?

You could try Freeola - http://freeola.com/about.php - for free site hosting. There are no banners, they provide "unlimited" web space and the only cost with their "free" accounts is that you use their local rate 0845 number when you upload your files. PHP is supported too.

I'm sorted now. I have a friend who works for a provider and he (as a perk) can allow close friends space and anything else they need. I was going to move anyway, but this has just speeded everything up. It's just time consuming moving the site and the forums (keeping everything intact). Had some trouble trying to back up the mySQL database as Lycos kept going slow and throwing up errors. I got there in the end though and everything is working great. I had to wait 12 hours for my domain to be transfered to the new name servers. At least my domain doesn't point anywhere else now.

In a way I'm glad Lycos did this as it speeded up my intentions to move.

I have had exactly the same experience - Lycos' frame ads have ruined my PHP driven photo album and pop-up windows.

I've got a depressing amount of sites with Lycos hat I now need to move.

Have you got a domain name? If so you can get 100mb of space with mySQL and php from http://www.distanthost.com . Without a domain name you'll only get 25mb of space. Theres no ads on your site and all you have to do is click on some banners in your control panel once a week. Thats no hardship.
