I am on AOL Silver and in June last year I was sent a message from AOL, promising a speed upgrade from 1mbps to 2mbps. According to the message, this was supposed to happen between August & September last year. Now it's nearly a year since I received the message, and still I've had no speed upgrade...in fact, using Speedtest.net, my connection speed is 479kbps. Does anyone else on AOL silver remember getting this message from AOL, and was your speed upgraded ? I've been thinking of changing my ISP to BT, but AOL have been reliable enough, and would rather they just increased my speed as they said they would.

Seems you are in the same boat as me I Recieved that message and the Only upgrade I got was a different connectivity driver setup I get 1.1 MB on this line though I did experience it at 6.2 MB some months ago for a few hours Why? Nobodies saying. Worth going to AOL Member services and enquiring about the Price of an Upgrade (Get a free router)And they may give you a discounted Price? Disregard the Numbers on the Ads they will be lower than that. Bottom line You may Not get a Big speed increase But your Numbers are Not right if you are on the 512K link should be in the region of TX 144 RX 576 Difference if any? will be only Pennies to upgrade A 1.1MB Link Really is the Best speed to Stop Buffering Sound and Pictures. My numbers are...TX 288 RX 1152 You are under No obligation to take the first offer (They may barter OK?) Do keep us informed as to what happens

Thanks for the reply. I might try speaking to AOL member services as you advise. I wasn't sure what the following part of your reply meant, though. "Bottom line You may Not get a Big speed increase But your Numbers are Not right if you are on the 512K link should be in the region of TX 144 RX 576 Difference if any? will be only Pennies to upgrade A 1.1MB Link Really is the Best speed to Stop Buffering Sound and Pictures. Could you explain, please ?

Clarifying the Numbers... The TX Number refers to the Best average Download speed. Is about 40% of the Number Therefore TX 288 Kbits (Divided by 100 multiplied by 40) = 115 Kbits May see the occasional 125 Kbits speed when Downloading
The RX number refers to the Running speed of the Link so My 1.1 Mbits link is Listed at 1152 Kbits Tip Hover your Mouse pointer over the Green arrows to see the Numbers
PS If you hover over the Connection icon You will only get the Link speed

I got the advance notification as well and was lucky enough to get the increased speed. Download speed chugs along nicely at 1962kbs or thereabouts. I agree that although slated by many, I have always had good service from AOL.

I sent a message to the AOL member services team asking why my speed hadn't been increased. They sent me an email back three days ago...just found it...it was in my AOL spam folder. Part of the letter says:
"I understand your concern regarding the speed upgrade and will try my level best to provide you with the necessary information.
I have contacted the necessary department on your behalf and has placed a request to upgrade the speed on your connection. The request will be processed in 7 to 10 working days and you will experience the upgraded connection speed.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation in this regard. If you have any further concern or inquiry in this regard, please feel free to write back to us and we would be glad to assist you further."
So I'll keep my fingers crossed and see what happens...I'll be letting you know.

Hi
Your ISPs can promise you a fantastic speed and then supply it. Whether you get it or not is not in their hands. For most of us BT and the condition of the wiring and the distance between your PC and the exchange usually is the limiting factor on any ISP speed increase.

My connection speed has been increased at last. I contacted AOL using Live Help, and after checking a few things with me, the operator arranged for AOL to phone me and do a test on my line. When the test had been done, AOL told me that my speed had been set at 512kbps at my local exchange (I think that's what he said). Anyway,he said that my speed would be upgraded within 7 working days.....6 working days later and my speed had gone from around 480kbps to 2200kbps. A test I'd done using the BT website said that my line is only capable of receiving up to 2500kbps, so I'm well pleased.

Without knowing your details that is still a pathetic broadband speed. Can you reduce your subscription for the speed you're actually capable of getting?

There is nothing 'pathetic' about a 2.5mb broadband speed. In fact it's about the average speed for most people. AOL certainly aren't going to charge him less when he's getting what BT say is his maximum line speed anyway.
