Ive had pop ups on my screen for a couple of days prompting me to install AVG version 8.0 due to the fact that support for version 7.5 (which I currently use) runs out at the end of May.
Is there anything I need to be aware of before installing version 8.0? I presume I dont have to uninstall 7.5 and that 8.0 will just install itself straight over the top, but I was just wondering if there were any settings I needed to tweak once installed.
Any replies appreciated before I go ahead with the upgrade.
Thanks

KeithF , you can't install it straight over the top . If you follow my first post on...this...thread it tells the best way to install. You don't need to change any settings but it will take a bit of getting used to. If you need any more help we'll do our best to help.
P.S. do you use SpywareBlaster ?

Thanks. I have just read the other post and will update when I have more time. Will it conflict with spywareblaster, as I use that.

It will Heather.Part of SptwareBlasters protection status ( ie some of the registry keys ) of Internet Explorer , is flagged up by AVG when you run a scan.
If you're going to use AVG it leaves you a few choices.
(a) Use SpywareBlaster with I.E. only partially protected. (b) Use SpywareBlaster with I.E. fully protected and ignore the items that AVG flags. (c) Uninstall SpywareBlaster.
For me the first two options defeat the purpose of using SpywareBlaster so i've chosen to uninstall it in the meantime. I've no idea if AVG intend to address this problem , but if they were to , SpywareBlaster could always be reinstalled.

I have looked at option A, and would disabling protection for IE make a difference as I am a Firefox user? Don't use IE at all now, except for Windows updates. And would this affect me using IE tab in Firefox?
Am just looking at the options before I decide to take the plunge.
Thanks.

Well I've updated both the laptop and desktop. Run the scan on the desktop it came up with 218 warnings, I don't know if they were anything to do with spywareblaster, but I did uninstall that before going ahead.
I am running the scan on the laptop, so it will interesting to see what that comes up with.

Suspect it is , ( Internet Explorer active x compatibilities ) , and is just left overs after the uninstall. Here's what i did , same situation. Run AVG and remove all the warnings. Go to the virus vault and empty it. Next time you run a scan these warnings should be a thing of the past.

Well I have downloaded and installed it now, and it did indeed remove the old version during the installation. One thing I would say though is that the links on the other thread to download, did actually download a file, BUT the file I downloaded came up with a corrupt file message and unable to install.
I therefore did a google search on AVG anti virus and downloaded it from their web site. The site had two links, one from their recommended partner (which resulted in another corrupted download file) and one from their own server which has worked fine.
Not done any scans yet, but I have done all the updates. I will let you know if I have any problems. And in answer to your question Fife Flyer, no I dont use SpywareBlaster but I do use Ad Aware 2007.

It's just that there is a conflict with SpywareBlaster and AVG , but you'll be pleased to know , none with Ad Aware 2007 ( none that i'm aware of anyway ).

Well all installed and running ok in fact I think its quite a good improvement on the previous 7.5 version. I just have one thing bothering me at the moment in that when you double click the icon on the desktop or on the taskbar to open the main program screen, the notification at the bottom which refers to upgrading your protection to AVG Internet Security always appears and I have to keep clicking on the Hide Notification button to get rid of it.
Is there any way to permanently turn off this notification? I have looked in the settings but couldnt see anything that appears to relate to it.

There is but you do so at your own risk as i don't know , at the moment anyway , if it affects the working of the program.
Navigate to the folder that contains the AVG 8files and rename these two
avgresf.dll avgmwdef_us.mht

Hmmm ok might just leave it then, its just annoying having to hide the notification every time you open it. Thanks anyway.
