Let Down by 1and1
      #393946 - Sat May 10 2008 06:02 PM

I have had a 1&1 hosting account for many years.
They seem to have recently changed the quota to include not only disc space on the server but now also number of files uploaded.

I have used less than half the space allocated on the server (5.8gb out of total space of 12gb) but I am being forced to remove files as I now have many more than Im allowed on the server.

Apparently I'm allowed only 262,144 files but I have many more than this on the server. I have no way to tell how many files I have on the server, but I have already deleted many thousands.

It is impossible to 'communicate' with this company. After three quarters of an hour on the phone to India I was told "well 1and1 have changed the control panel and theres nothing we can do about it".

Im told my only option is to upgrade to a dedicated server, which I dont want to do.

I feel firstly 1and1 have breached the original contract we had by changing their service, without even informing me. Secondly, they are breaching advertising standards, as there is no mention of this restriction in their advertisements.

I too feel let down by 1&1, they recently withdrew support for frontpage on the Linux servers. I know I may be a rarity using frontpage, but I like it and it works for me. When I contacted them to tell them I couldn't login to my site, the friendly call centre in India just said 'you must change your software as we no longer support frontpage' I didn't want to but I then found out I could switch to MS hosting but I would hae to also upgrade my current package to the next level.
I don't know what their problem is at 1&1 but keeping happy customers obviously isn't one of them. They just seem interested in boosting the amount of cash they can get from customers without any regard for keeping them.
The call centres struggle to actually understand what you are saying to them, keep you on hold for ever and fail to offer any solution. I have tried e-mailing but get no response. I will be moving to another hosting provider and will just have to write off the remainder of my contract with 1&1. It's a shame because I have been with them for several years and even recommended them in the past.

I left 1and1 at the beginning of the year. Looks like I got out just in time!

Make the switch and put this headache behind you. I chose GoDaddy. It cost about the same and I like it a lot. Their support speaks fluent English and I think they are U.S.-based. I've only had to call them once, during my transfer. I was on hold for a while, but I found them very helpful and patient. They answer emails too! What I really like about GoDaddy is everything you get by default, for free, with a Linux server.

Good luck! -- DJ

P.S. Be prepared to create a spam filter for 1and1 emails after you leave them. :-)

1 and 1 are one of the worst web space companies going. Their support and reliability is shocking, infact many of the big names should be avoided at all costs-

Some companies that I will definately never use again are-

1and1

You think you have problems ?

Can you believe this of 1and1 ?

In 2005 I was billed for renewing a web URL that I didn't want. I wrote and told them as much after receiving bills.

Recently I got threatening letters from a debt collections agency who claimed I owed a small amount of money (Less than £10) to 1and1 and demanding payment with £5 charges from the collections agency.

I demanded to know what this was for and after various phone calls wasting my time I gave the collections agency my e-mail address and asked that 1and1 furnish me with the original invoice.

They were sueing me for not renewing domain names I don't want !!!!! Naturally I asked when renewing domain names became obligatory but so far they have not replied.

When it comes to commercial ethics you can guess how high on the list I would rate them.

I shall now take every opportunity to tell the world of my experiances with 1and1

Wow, now this thread really did surprise me.

I have been with 1and1 for just over 3 years and never had a problem. Well, they didn't send me the so called free software and I moaned a bit but other than that I have not had a problem.

I use Frontpage and it works fine so don't understand what the deal is there either :0?

Whenever I have emailed them a question too, they have been really prompt in replying and have been quite helpful.
I am sorry you folks have had the problems you have mentioned.
