XP SP3 downloads running again from Windows Update
      #393714 - Wed May 07 2008 03:56 PM

SP 3 downloads are good to go again. But, the issues still there.
I have Highlighted the Point. MS have Put a Block in Place until they resolve the issue (With a Patch)

Microsoft is giving the automatic web release of Windows XP Service Pack 3 another go today, after an eleventh hour muck-up ruined its scheduled availability last week.

The truant XP service pack is ready for download via Microsoft's Download Center or alternatively, Windows Update if using Internet Explorer.

Microsoft had pulled the mass download last week when it uncovered an incompatibility issue between SP3 and its point-of-sale application, Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS). The issue in question — and they've yet to specify what the problem is — also affects Windows Vista SP1.

Redmond is still apparently knuckling down over the issue. Customers with RMS are being advised against installing either service pack until the error is resolved. In the meantime, it has deployed a band-aide filter for the automatic Windows Update to block RMS users from getting it. Microsoft said a permanent fix is currently in beta and will be available later this month.

Personally i would avoid this for the time being.

Earlier on this morning I had 2 failed attempts via automatic updates . Decided to attempt a manual install. 40 minutes later it decided i "did not have permission" and then proceeded to spend another 25 minutes uninstalling what it had already installed. At the end of that 25 minutes i was informed that windows had partially updated and windows may no longer work properly.

This update aint ready to go.

Well I had no problems the weekend before last on three machines. I went for a manual download which I then transferred to the other two with a USB stick. I disconnected from the internet then disabled both firewall and antivirus plus real time protection on MBAM. Good luck if you try again.

For all Windows XP issues, visit the Help and Support site at http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...spx?gprid=1173, enter location and then choose your product.

Which is exactly what I did and again with no problem whatsoever.

Yep , i had been to to the Microsoft site prior to the attempted install , and had followed all the suggested procedures.

I've now sent an incident report to Microsoft and wait to see if I'm offered support.

For the record, Have read elsewhere SP3 offers little unless you have not kept XP upto date.

Is it worth the hassle?

True , there is a lot of cumulative fixes but there is a few relevant new... hotfix and security updates...that i would rather have , than not have.

Well , my free support from a Microsoft professional duly arrived , well within the timescale promised , and I'm now all sorted with the SP3 install.
For the record installing in "safe mode" did the trick.

Have to say the help and support offered is exceptional.

Well that's one way of getting the garden shed repainted!

Followed the manual download route as advised above - 1hr 22 mins to complete.
Installation 47 mins. Successful result, at least there appears to be no problems - yet.

Did SP2 really take this long? Can't remember if it did, it's been a while.

I wonder if Microsoft can dream up something else like this, I might just get round to painting the garden seat.
