Anyone know if you can record using the microphone input socket?
Cant seem to add any input devices otherwise? Maybe I need to get some sort of sound card on my laptop?

If you mean using the mic socket to plug a line connecter into for recording the answer is not as simple as that.
You need to antenuate the line sig/voltage by 100:1 to bring it to the same level as what a mic would deliver to the mic input socket.
So the answer would be don't do it unless you know what you are doing as the sound chip mic input could be damaged.

Hi markyd.
I found it quiet simple, if you have an amplifier.
I conected whatever i use,record player cassete player, tuner,to record music,i conected i think you call a rca red & white cable from the record out socket on the amp. The two cables go into a single jack which then plugs straight into the sound card,at the back of my cabinet.Cost me £7.Hope this can get you going Dutchboy.

Was your reply refuring to the Sound Card LINE input, as the question was directed at the sound card MIC input being used.

I looked at Audacity ages ago but found that I could not get the Lame plug in to work regarding mp3's and I also had difficulty understanding what I have to do to get it work.
The article in Webuser has prompted me to look at what looks like a decent piece of free software again but I think I'll fall down regarding the same problem again. 
Can anyone explain what I am doing wrong and how I can understand things so I can get it to work? 
I have access to both a pc with XP and Vista Operating system installed so will probably install it on both machines.

Audacity in it's basic format does not support Mp3, it need's LAME. Once you have downloaded LAME to your hard drive, open Audacity.
From File, choose 'Open', select your music file, i.e. one in WAV format. Once opened, displayed in Audacity, you wish to convert to Mp3 format, from File Choose 'Export as MP3' - Audacity will ask where you have stored the LAME file to do this. Browse to where it's stored and open, Audacity will then extract the contents automatically, store, then convert to Mp3 and save to folder of your choice.
Now, whenever you wish to convert and save to MP3, Audacity knows where LAME is to do this.

George, I think what you say makes much more sense Thanks...
I'll experiment later and hopefully get it to work and it could help in that's it's a free program and the one I have been using is not as good as it once was.
Audacity does seem pretty good. And popular.
I'm pretty impressed with all it's capable of as a WAV recorder so if I can get a decent mp3 out of it, that would be fantastic.
