Was using AOL Broadband as normal on DSL modem.
On signing off, AOL started to download a software update (which I later found out to be to do with the migration to the Carphone Warehouse servers). This update crashed and since then I cannot connect. The error message I get is "Authentication Failure" Error 47-DUN-0691 Username/Password Invalid on the domain
I note now that AOL looks for TCP/IP rather than DSL modem.
Phoned tech guys. Tried connecting using different usernames and passwords. Last guy seems to think that on migration the system picked up my previous phone number details. He set up account again with correct details but still no joy.
He now thinks its a BT line fault and need to get engineer out. How can a piece of software throw out the line?
Or is he talking rubbish?
Anyone else experienced this?
If I change ISP at this point, would a MAC code work or do I still have to wait for the apparent line fault to be rectified?

Been where you are spoke to India head butted the wall got a MAC code now with sky and things have worked perfect since, been with them for 2 months now ever since AOL they started the migration to the car phone warehouse.
A piece of software will not cause a copper line fault, I found AOL tech support simply frustrating if the fault did not follow the flow chart they use.
Good Luck

Had problems with AOL in the past but not this particular problem. I have found that I you phone them you get one piece of advice, tolld to carry that out then phone back. When you phone back you get completely different advice !!! I have persisted with them over the years and the few connection problems I have had have been resolved fairly quickly .... but you really have to be persistant with them.
I too have noticed the difference when you are lgging in. What does this actually mean ?

Thank you for posting this I have to agree with you that AOLs Updates recently has not gone smoothly Even I am having odd unexplainable lockups /slowdowns ,since the Combination of AOL 9.VR and the AOL BB dialler "update" (am running XP Professional) Don't go and Change ISPs for the sake of a connection problem Have to be a bad lockout to get me to budge! And yes the AOL people read verbatim off a preprepared troubleshooting list and Sound authoritive but I doubt if many of them deal with them in the World outside? And I too get nowhere with their advice!
What to do? First get the AOL Program 9.0 VR program. You can get it from AOL Keyword Upgrade and save it,only a 399k file Labelled AOLDNLD Next stop, open the Control Panel and click on the Internet Options icon When the next window opens locate the Connections tab 3rd from right and in the top box on this page you will have 2 Items in this box viz ..AOLand DialBB Which one has (default) aganst its name? If you see the DialBB has no tag look for the Set default button Having done this, .look below and see if the setting is set to "Never dial a connection"? ditto with the AOL setting should be the same If there is a difference and the setting has to be altered then press the Set default button(In this area) to save the setting and press the Apply & OK Buttons at the Foot of the Page to save and leave the Page Now we shift attention to the Triangular AOL icon by the Clock...click on it to get the Menu Locate Connectivity then AOL Dialler Settings In this New window check that the current Default dialler is set to DialBB to tally with the Previous Task if No then click the AOLDialler button Below and the setting will change over click on the Save button to Keep the setting Last check here before we move on is to check that all the Tick boxes on this page are unticked Close the Page and wen return to the AOL Menu ...This time find Connect with Dialer click on it and this may reopen the previous message box and a "Login box" its the Lattter that we are interested in.All you do here is make sue there is no boxes ticked and your Screename is not showing and C)the connection box is set to AOL Now try reconnecting to AOL? Any better? If Not then swap the dialer default over To AOL and try that setting?
Still no good? Go back to the Intenet options /connections Page and remove the DialBB option off the window(and click Apply) Then It must run on the Old settings?(No choice!)
Hows that?...There is a chance the Program may reinstall later but Keep the Settings as I have shown you and there'll be no Problem (bar these unexplained lockups and some slow pages)Chances are it glitched on the original install ?
To Reinstall AOL remember that file we told you to get from AOL? called AOLDNLD
Go offline and Click on the Folder and all you have to do is sign in as an "Existing Member" and Let it run should take no more than 2 or 3 minutes and all your settings and favourites will be transferred over unless you want them on your desktop!(Thats the only thing to watch out for ) It will next connect up to AOL and the Login screen will appear Note Disregard the search for old versions of AOL ,You can use these still if you wish. But the settings are transferred to the New version of AOL They cannot clash as they have been renamed .Is worth clearing out all the old versions bar the most recent to keep things simple (Via the uninstall option on the Control Panel) Note also it will download 1 or 2 patches later if you have not done this before Let them in. and DO NOT Turn the computer off as 1 patch is auto installed just before Windows shuts down OK? Other than that point You should have AOL up and running within a few minutes
Last word the New (TCP/IP) arrangement is sometimes Slow at connecting(Like an old Dial up modem) be patient!
If you have a router it connects straight away to Internet Explorer and your Homepage (No messing around with the connectivity software settings) AOL will give you a free router(and more BB filters) if you enquire.only downside is they sign you up for another year. And, they'll revise your payment often they'll come down. worst case scenario you pay the same price as now! Me personally, I was up to 25 pounds per month at one time now I'm 18 or 19 Pounds per month , and I have had free speed updates and the Free NetGear Router. Still use the Voyager Modem and I have 2 as spares (and several spare Microfilters)

Thanks for concise reply.
In fact, one of the first things I did when I had this connection problem was to reinstall an old version of AOL. I then read on the help section that if you do this it switches you back to the old system again. Therefore, I completely ignored everything "DiallBB" and set up a new Broadband Connection (under "Network Connections"), logged in as username@aol.com and hey presto, I'm in!
The only problem now is that each time I boot up I have to manually switch this connection - is there any way I can do this on startup?
And like you say, I am sure it will try and reinstall the update again, but will cross that bridge when I come to it.
As for switching, its not just because of the connection problem. It took me six attempts to get a house move request through, then this problem appears, and its also the fact that the Tech guy promised to call me back yesterday and didnt. Speed has also dropped from average of 3.8 to 2.5, and this is before the migration.
Was going to go with Sky as well but they don't cover my exchange! Darn!

Bit of a head scratcher on the connectivity Issue ,Have you tried replacing the Modem driver? Had a look through the One click fix wizard list re Connectivity section and the nearest thing to what you require is the Repair ACS (last item on section) Quote:
Repair ACS This One-Click Fix repairs your AOL Connectivity Service to help fix connectivity issues.
There are several other items here which do similar things but this is the Best of the Bunch
Only other one worth trying is this one Quote:
Rebuild AOL Adapter This One-Click Fix rebuilds your AOL Adapter. Your adapter may have been corrupted, and this change may improve your ability to connect to AOL.
Thats got me out of a bad connection issue many times .I think it has to do a reset of the Computer to Finish? And go to the AOL BB connections and tick the "Automatically reconnect Me box" (in case of interrruption)
