Connection has Vanished
      #393066 - Tue Apr 29 2008 06:16 PM

Hi, My system is an emachine420 running XPhome

I have been using a wireless router ( model D-Link DSL-G624T ) to connect to the internet.
After a system crash last night I have found that the connection is no longer available. The computer was set up so that the internet automatically connected on bootup, this no longer happens and when I go to START> CONNECT TO> SHOW ALL CONNECTIONS the connection is longer available.

I am now connected using the ethernet cable but would obviously prefer getting back my wireless connection.

I have contacted D-Link tech support who said it was missing drivers & to contact the machine vendor, which I have done but as I am out of Warrenty they would offer no support.

System restore also proved fruitless.
Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Is it in Device Manager?

Right-click My Computer > Properties.

Click the Hardware tab, then Device Manager. You may have a yellow question mark.

If you don't see it, click the + to the left of Network Adapters.

OK OK I can't go any faster! aaaaaaaaaaaagh!

Hi RichieP thanx for the post.
Checked in device manager and the only thing under the network adapter is the Via Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter which I take it is what im using to get internet access via the cable. NO other connections are available

You're right, the connection has vanished. It may have been the wireless card that caused the crash. It seems like it's not being seen by the computer anymore. You can either get another the same. They're usually fairly easily accessible via a small panel underneath. If you don't feel confident enough to do that, buy a PC Card like this

Hi,Thanx again for the reply, sorry been away for a few days.
So, am I right in thinking its the network card has burnt out or something?
Really not comfortable messing around inside the machine would I be better asking my local PC guy to replace it?
Had a look at your link but dont think I would know where to start... Bit like a car, can put petrol in it but anything else and its back to the shop lol.
Appreciate the help, Thanx again

It sounds like it's burnt out or something like that.

You could get someone to look at it for a fee, or buy the product I linked to. It's very simple. Install the software from the CD, plug in the PC Card and use the software to find your wireless connection.

Just make sure you have a PC (or PCMCIA slot as it used to be called).

It looks like this

hello, i dont think you have done any damage to your card, all i think what as happened is that you have some how lost your driver. The simple solution is to find the driver for your wireless card and reinstall it and then it should work fine. if after that it doesnt work then you have done damage to your card then only then have it replaced. hope it helps
