I tried to download .NET Framework 2.0 via 'Automatic Updates'. It seemed to download OK, but it failed to install properly. From 'Add or Remove Programs' in 'Control Panel' I tried to carry out a repair of the installation. This lead to a dialogue box which said there was an error during set-up and gave a link which lead to site

You may need to repair your installation of the .NET Framework if you upgrade your operating system or if the current installation of the .NET Framework becomes corrupted. This article describes how to do so.

Steps to repair the .NET Framework installation
1. Obtain the original installation source. For example, if you installed the .NET Framework from a CD-ROM or from a DVD, insert that disc. If you downloaded the .NET Framework , download the .NET Framework again. Make sure that you click save to disk. If you installed the .NET Framework from a network share, reconnect to that share.
2. Click Start, click Run, type the following command, and then click OK:
N:\dotnetframework\dotnetfx.exe /t:c:\temp /c:"msiexec.exe /i c:\temp\netfx.msi REINSTALL=ALL ReinstallMODE=vomus"
Note Replace N:\ in this command syntax with the original installation path.
Important If you do not have a C:\temp folder on your computer, create one before you run this command.
The Microsoft Windows Installer will verify and repair the .NET Framework installation.

I should be very grateful for advice. Is the above the solution the one I should be pursuing? And what does "Important If you do not have a C:\temp folder on your computer, create one before you run this command." mean - how do I find out if I have a C:\temp folder, and how do I create one if I do not? Also, from where can I download .NET Framework 2.0 to disc?
I have tried to uninstall the .NET Framework 2.0, but was again presented with a dialogue box saying there was an error during set up.
Further, 'Automatic Updates' keeps trying to install a Service Pack for .NET Framework 2.0. It seems to download OK but will not install.
As I say, I would be very grateful for advice for, as can be seen from my questions, I am fumbling round in the dark!!! I am running Xp Home.

Hi denis , i would try a reinstall of the NET Framework 2.0.
First of all download Microsoft's windows installer clean up utility from.. here and save it to a folder on your pc. Once you've done that , close all open windows , navigate to the folder where you saved the file and run the file to install the program . Next , on your desktop , click on start > all programs > click on the Windows Installer Clean Up Utility. A list of installed programs will appear. If NET Framework 2.0. is listed , left click on it's entry and click on the "remove" button. Now check in add/remove to see if the entries gone.
Let us know how it goes and we can advise on the next move.

Hi FF. Many thanks for your reply to my post.
I downloaded the Windows Installer Clean-up Utility to my desktop. But when I went to install it I was presented with a dialogue box headed ' Installer Information', which said: 'Error 1500. Another installation is in progress. You must complete that installation before continuing this one'.
Do you think this is related to 'Automatic Updates' which, when I shut down my computer, keeps trying to install a Service Pack for .NET Framework 2.0? The Service Pack seems to have downloaded OK but will not install.
Further, I notice that the 'Welcome' dialogue box for 'Windows Installer Clean Up Set-up' has an image with the words: 'Microsoft Office Update' Does this mean anything?

Yes it is. Basically the windows installer ( which is used to install the updates ) , is using a certain registry key to try and install the updates. When the windows installer is finished it removes this key. As it's not completed the install of the updates the key still exists. When you try to run applications such as the Windows Installer Clean-up Utility they look for this key . If it doesn't exist it will install no problem. However , as in your case , the key still exists , and is therefor in use , hence the reason you get an error.
Could you try turning off automatic updates , start > right click on "my computer" > properties > automatic updates > turn off automatic updates > apply > OK. Restart your pc and try to run the clean up utility again.

Did as you suggested, FF. The clean up utility installed and removed .NET Framework 2.0 OK, but Add/Remove is showing it as still being there.

mmm , strange as the clean up utility should remove all related registry keys of which the add/remove entry is one.
Anyway , try a manual download of NET Framework 2.0 from... here . Rather than the "run" option i would save the file to your pc ( to somewhere you can remember where to find it of course ) then close all running applications and navigate to where you've downloaded the file to , and run the installer.
If all goes to plan i would then go back to that same link and download the NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1.

I note in Add/Remove that there is a Security Update (KB928365) installed for .Net Framework 2.0. Should I do anything about that first, or will that be treated as just part of .Net Framework 2.0?

denis , you'll just have to suck it and see. That particular update has given numerous people problems ( installing ).
I would leave it and see if you can manage to install the other two. It's the luck of the draw really.

Things are looking good, FF! I did as you suggested and managed to download and (according to the dialogue boxes) install both .NET Framework 2.0 and .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1.
However, although both show up in Add/Remove as being installed, only the Service Pack shows up in the Windows Installer Clean Up Utility list as being present. Is this a problem?
Should I expect to notice a change in my computer with .NET Framework 2.0 installed?

Good news you're sorted. As for your two questions :
(1) The fact that only the Service Pack shows up in the Windows Installer Clean Up Utility list , is not a problem. The clean up utility should really only be used when the add/remove option fails. When it does fail it's often down to the fact that the windows installer is at the root of the problem , and it's for this reason the clean up tool is designed. In normal circumstances it's best to use the add/remove option.
(2) You'll see no changes/differences whatsoever after installing NET Framework .
P.S. If you haven't done it already remember to reactivate automatic updates.

That doesn't come into it in this case. You're just a name in a vast list of people who have had problems with Net Framework. We've been fortunate this time. Type in "Net Framework won't install" into google and you'll see what i mean.
