Hijack This Log Check
      #392806 - Sat Apr 26 2008 05:28 PM

Been having problems with the PC crashing over the last few months - but it's got really bad lately - a blue screen appears which says the following:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

The problem seems to be caused by the following file: avg7core.sys

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Then some more about "if this is the first time".....etc.

If you need more info on that I can post it, but I'd guess the main info needed is there - looks like something to do with the AVG anti virus? It also only seems to happen when I'm using Firefox - Been using IE for the last couple of hours and it's been fine. Previous to that, in Firefox, it crashed several times in an hour.

I would d/load AVG 8.0 from HERE.

then disconnect from the internet and uninstall AVG 7 .

then install AVG 8.0

see if that fixes the problem

Thanks bricat - I actually did this last night, and so far no further problems, although my computer is still running a little slow - but the new AVG 8 is scanning in the background so I guess that could be why.

People have said before I have too many programs running in the background, but without knowing what they are, I can't really tell if they're needed.

At the moment there are 48 programs running.

Download and scan with CCleaner
  1. CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.
  2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
    Then select "Cookies"
Move any cookies you wish to retain, e.g. login cookies, in the left-hand window to the right-hand window by highlighting them and clicking the right arrow in the centre.

  3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.
    In the Windows Tab:

    • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
    • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
    • Clean all entries in the "System" section.
    • Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
    • Clean any others that you choose.

    In the Applications Tab:

    • Clean all entries in the Mozilla Firefox Section.
    • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
    • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
    • Clean any others that you choose.

  4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
  5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
  7. Click "exit" when done.

then DEFRAG your C:\ drive.

to help speed up your system.

then let us know how the computer is running.

Ok I've done all that - removed quite a bit of stuff by the look of it.

Seems a bit better - most sites are ok, but on a couple the scrolling is awfully slow - and the mouse wheel doesn't work at all, yet others it's absolutely fine.

I'm on a 2mb connection.

Sometimes things take an age to happen (such as opening folders) but the next minute it's fine.

I found a folder called ie-spyad - is that anything to be worried about?

And just to add - it seems to be pictures which are slowing the page scrolling down.

I can only assume this is because of the broadband speed. I have "up to 2mb" at the moment, which on a speed test is actually 1.6mb

I'm upgrading to 4mb this week, which is to be automatically upgraded by Virgin to 10mb in the very near future.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  2. Close any open browsers.
  3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

  4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Ok, before I start, I need to ask what will probably seem a ridiculous question - How do I turn off AVG aanti virus? I can't see how to anywhere - there is no option to turn it off.

I can turn off the Sunbelt firewall, but not AVG!

Thanks.

there are no ridiculous questions, only ridiculous answers

right click on the AVG icon in your task bar (beside the clock) and click on EXIT.

whenever you reboot it will automatically load up again.

Well I did that earlier, and it just asked am I sure I want to exit the AVG control centre - not that it would stop running! It still says it's running in th security centre, but I'll carry on.

Thanks, back soon with the logs.

That looks clean.

  7. Click "exit" when done.

then DEFRAG your C:\ drive.

to help speed up your system.

then :-

download and run startup inspector
make sure you read the instructions.

It will tell you what is running at startup and what can be safely removed, and will allow you to remove the unnecessary entries.

then let us know how the computer is running.

Ok I've done start up inspector and removed five "not required" programmes.

But this morning it's the same - some pages just seem to stall for about 5 seconds, then they load up. It's similar to dial up page loading!

The same used to happen when I had the Tom Tom Home programme running - because it used a lot of memory, everything else slowed right down.

Some programmes also take a while to load, where they didn't before. When I click on the AVG 8 icon in the taskbar it takes a good 30 seconds to load up.

As an example, the Sky News website loads half the page, then stalls for about 10 seconds, and then the rest of the page loads.

When scrolling with the mouse wheel, when I get to a picture, the page drags, but once past the picture, it scrolls at normal speed.

Hope that makes sense.

And also to add, I have the fasterfox add on set at turbo charged - not sure if that would slow it down. Still seems the same when I disable it.

hit CNTRL + ALT + DEL to bring up taskmanager.
click on the processes tab at the top.
look down the CPU list and see what is using the most CPU
and let me know what the SYSTEM IDLE figure is.
what are the specs on the computer, RAM, PROCESSOR ETC.

also :-

Go to Start | Run
type or copy the following:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll .then click OK.

Do the same with these files. Go to Start | Run Type in the following one at a time. Then click ok.
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Msjava.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Browseui.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll

let me know if any don't register.

I edited my above post just after you'd read it with some more info.

When I call up the task manager all I have is the box - with no tabs at the top.

I can scroll down using the mouse wheel, but dragging the blue bar at the side has no effect!

Processes:

msimn.exe - 15780k

Firefox.exe - 51360k

avgrsx.exe - 37072k

explorer.exe - 21596k

svchost.exe - 27324k

kpf4ss.exe - 14760k

Specs:
AMD Athlon XP2400+

512MB DD Ram

120GB HD

ATI 9000/128MB DDR

If I mouse over the task manager icon in taskbar (I have no options at the top of the task manager window), CPU usage is at 4% - this has been at 100% on occasion.

regsvr32 Msjava.dll it says "LoadLibrary("MSjava.dll") failed - the specified module could not be found.

All others succeeded.

Tom Tom home when I had it - but I got rid of it for that reason - it was crippling my system. Others had the same problem with it.

Firefox seems to use the most now - 100% on opening it which I suposed is expected, then only hits about 6%, or between 50 and 70% if a page is loading.

I seem to only have these problems on a few web pages - Sky News being the worst.

But since I've upgraded my broadband from 2mb to 4mb it is much better so I think it may just be my connection. Virgin are upgrading all 4mb connections to 10mb soon so i think the issue could resolve itself.

It probably is your connection speed if it is only happening on a few sites, some sites are very graphic intense using a lot of flash animations etc which can take a while to load. once you go up to 10Mb it should help.
