Hijack log file - slow computer
      #392637 - Thu Apr 24 2008 11:11 PM

Hi - Having problems with my son's laptop. It's taking forever to start up and get connected to the internet and then once connected it is very slow. Can you have a look at this log file and let me know if there is anything on it that looks suspicious or needs removing.

Many thanks

I don't see anything untoward there.

Download and scan with CCleaner
  1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.
  2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
    Then select "Cookies"
Move any cookies you wish to retain, e.g. login cookies, in the left-hand window to the right-hand window by highlighting them and clicking the right arrow in the centre.

  3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.
    In the Windows Tab:

    • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
    • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
    • Clean all entries in the "System" section.
    • Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
    • Clean any others that you choose.

    In the Applications Tab:

    • Clean all entries in the Mozilla Firefox Section.
    • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
    • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
    • Clean any others that you choose.

  4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
  5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
  7. Click "exit" when done.

then DEFRAG your C:\ drive.

to help speed up your system.

then let us know how the computer is running.

Hi - thanks for the quick response. I've done the above but it is still running slow - especially on start up and when first connecting to the internet. I've posted another Hijack report. Is there anything else I can try?

Hi - Sorry for delay in replying. We've been away for a few days. The computer does seem to be running a lot better now and once you actually get onto the internet it's ok. Navigating between programmes is a lot better too. The main problem now seems to be the length of time the computer takes to start up.

Here's the spec

NEC computer Intel Celeron M Processor
1.40GHz 248mb RAM

Microsoft XP Home Version 2002 (Service Pack 2)

download and run startup inspector
make sure you read the instructions.

It will tell you what is running at startup and what can be safely removed, and will allow you to remove the unnecessary entries.

you should also think about upgrading the RAM to at least 512Mb. this would make a lot of difference.
I don't care what microsoft say 256Mb is not enough for XP,
