Just caught this News Quote:
Microsoft finishes big XP update Microsoft said on Monday that it has wrapped up development of its long-awaited Service Pack 3 update to Windows XP.
The update, which consists of previously released updates and a few new bug fixes and changes, will be available for download via the Web on April 29. Microsoft said it plans to start pushing out XP SP3 this summer to "home users" who have Automatic Updates turned on.
A Microsoft representative said the company won't update boxed copies of Windows XP with the service pack, though it will be an option for computer makers that are still offering XP on new machines. Large computer makers have only until June to sell XP on standard systems, though some low-cost, low-memory machines can be sold with XP until 2010, as can some PCs aimed at emerging markets.
Microsoft has been testing Windows XP Service Pack 3 for some time. The product was planned to be released as early as 2006, but was pushed back several times as Microsoft focused on developing and updating Windows Vista

long-awaited ??.......... mmmmm , just read through the "white paper" to see what it consists of and there's not a lot that's new , and certainly nothing to get excited about.

Don't know about the New feature/s sure to be very minor The Bug fixes are selected Bundled security updates from when the SP2 update was made (Only benefits the Lazy updaters) So overall for us who are up to date this is a Nothing sort of Patch Could have issued it on the next Patch Tuesday as an optional catch up Security Patch as well Not worthy of the SP3 Label

From what BedstorfromAP is saying it appears as if they could have used a zip file instead.

I'm a bit dubious also what value this has for those who have consistently downloaded the updates they require since SP2. Are there any critical/real security updates?

If you want SP3 before Tuesday/Wednesday, it's 316MB at MajorGeeks but be careful which mirror you use as some are slow, perhaps even try the torrent. After installing you may get the new, more-forgiving WGA update.
Get it here http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4323.html

Hello Joe
I don’t think you’ll get any problems.
Don’t forget to copy the KB936929 file to a CD rather than have to download it again in the event of a reinstallation of XP.

Thanks Burr, I've now done another computer as well. Very slow as it only has 256MB of RAM. Seems to me you need a minimum of 512 MB Ram to run SP2 or SP3.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones because I've now installed XP SP3 on 3 machines over the weekend with no ill effects whatsoever. Get ready for the complaints from 'bad installs'

You know something Regardless of getting this Mega Patch The next time you run either Easy Cleaner or CCleaner there will be dozens of MS(kbxxxxxx) Files thrown out on the Registry Scan alone ...Does it every month.Averages about 10 links per Quiet month (and I Have a "clean" Registry) So it takes me back to the Top Why Dump all this on our doorstep when all that is needed is a tiny fraction the rest will be dumped on the next Easycleaner/CCleaner scan!

That's something you'll have to decide I'm afraid. Some users have had problems after downloading it but the vast majority haven't .If you check... this link... and look at my 3rd post in that thread ,there's a bit of info that may help you decide.
