This is getting really frustrating now! In the notification area, I have missing icons - today, it's the volume and network. I have trudged thro countless forums searching for a fix - right click and properties does not work because the missing icons are greyed out, so I am unable to tick to enable them. Today, power and clock are in black and ok, network and volume are greyed - sometimes power is greyed too - it never seems to happen with the clock. I have also tried the fix where you delete icons and pasticons in the registry - this fixes it on first reboot, then after that they're gone again. I have also, as suggested in one of the forums, system restored to a time before it started happening - done and ok on first reboot, then back to the problem again. Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated Thanks

I'm afraid I don't have an answer for you but this is a known irritant.
Deleting the two registry keys usually fixes it. Other culprits have been mentioned, e.g. RealTek.
Can you determine when it started and what was installed/uninstalled/changed at that time?

Not really - it was just a sort of 'oh, where's that gone?' kind of moment and I can't narrow it down to a particular day! I have a program installed caled Vista Manager, which allows you to restore defaults - this seemed to work, however, I am a victim of that other irritant where Windows explorer decides to restart randomly - once again, I cannot stop this happening (after visiting various forums)- when it does restart, the icons have gone again. Also, when i try to start vista manager back up to repeat the process, it says it is already running and to click the icon in the notification area to open it - no surprises, it's one of the ones that has gone missing so can do nothing. When I look at running processes in task manager, it's not there so I can't even close it, so a reboot is the only option, and so the loop starts all over again.

Don’t you think it’s ironic that a program that is supposed to manage and restore defaults, simply doesn’t?
Have a look through all your installed programs for free or lesser-known programs, e.g. vista manager, and uninstall any that you can do without.
Bear in mind that the Taskbar and systray (notification area) are, effectively, Windows Explorer. So, it’s worth looking in Event Viewer for errors occurring at the time that it restarts.

It`s funny that you should mention this problem because only yesterday my network icon disappeared.I had to go to the control panel network option to check if I was connected - which I was and the signal reading excellent and I had no problems surfing the net. Today after I had booted up this morning the icon was back as normal.I have no idea why it happened.I have not downloaded anything or made any changes,it was just not there one day and back the next.Weird.

Sometimes logging off and back on or restarting the computer clears the problem.

I've had a similar problem with the battery condition icon disappearing from the notification area. When I last used my laptop (Vista Premium) it was showing in the notification area. When I booted up my laptop, it wasn't there. I've tried all sorts unsuccesfully to get it back! It's so frustrating. I haven't installed any new software. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried the fix that involves deleting two registry keys?
If not, try it: 1. Create a system restore point before deleting the keys in case anything goes wrong.
2. Click the Windows Orb (Start), type regedit, press Enter and navigate to registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify.
3. In the right-pane there are two entries: IconStreams and PastIconsStream, right-click and delete them, then restart the computer.
