My kids’ computer has a big problem and I don’t know what to do with it so any help would be much welcomed. It will not start up windows xp; it gets to this screen that reads this message and what ever I do it keeps coming back to this screen. We apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this. If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose last known good configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked. If a pervious startup attempt was interrupted due to power failure or because the power or reset button was pressed, or if you aren’t sure what caused the problem, choose start windows normally. Safe Mode Safe Mode with Networking Safe Mode with Command Prompt Last known good configuration (your most recent settings that worked) Start Windows Normally Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice. Seconds until windows starts: 25

Try the 'last known config setting' first.
if that doesnt work try booting in safe mode and doing a system restore.
hope that helped

In my experience, 9 times out of 10 it's the hard drive that's failing.
Do you have an XP disk?

OK OK I can't go any faster! aaaaaaaaaaaagh!

You neeed to change the boot order to CD first.
When the computer first starts, tap the F2 or Del key and the BIOS screen will load.
Look for a Boot menu or Advanced and change the order to CD first.
Save the changes and restart.
It should ask to press any key to boot from CD, so press a key.
Let it load the drivers, then from the first menu press R to access the Recovery Console.
Hopefully there's no administrator password, or you know what it is.
Once in the Recovery Console, type chkdsk C: /p /r and press enter.
Let it finish (takes around an hour) then restart.
If it starts OK, the hard drive is damaged and needs replacing, but at least you'll get time to recover documents etc.

I too have got the same problem as MotoGPRossi and have tried RichieP's instuctions.
Unfortunately, after accessing Bios, changing the boot up to CD first and then restarting I'm not getting a prompt to press any key to boot from the CD.
However,I can boot up from the XP recovery CD if I press Ctrl,Alt&Del but I only get the option of restoring the system to Factory settings, which will result in my Hard drive being wiped clean.
I really need to access the Recovery Console because if the Hard drive is damaged and needs replacing I will have to back up my files.
Any help will be very much appreciated.

I know you said you have the same problem as the OP but can you give us a bit more detail. What error message do you get?

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really?
Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.

I really don't what other info I can give you except that I get the "we apologise for the inconvenience but windows did not start successfully" screen. What ever I do I always end up back with this same message.
I cannot start windows in safe mode or access the Recovery Console via the XP recovery CD and it would seem that every possible solution to my problem doesn't seem to work.
I think my heads about to explode!!

A couple of questions. Does the PC have a floppy drive and do you know if the hard disk is FAT32 or NTFS format?

Due to the fact that my computer will be soon receiving its pension it does indeed have a floppy drive and the hard drive is in NFTS format.

Unfortunately that means you need an XP CD that will allow you to boot up via the CD drive. Short of actually buying one is there any chance you can borrow one from somewhere?
