I have a Compaq desktop PC running Windows XP Pro and I understand that I should get a beep on boot up. Well, it doesn't and neither two other laptops owned by family members. Can anyone explain why we are not getting beeps?

Possible reasons:
1. Internal speaker cable come adrift or not working. 2. If the setting is present, the speaker may be turned off in the BIOS. 3. Some computers allow a separate setting for speaker volume and it may be muted or set low.
Plus any others I can't think of at the moment.

Thanks for input. The problem is that we are running 3 different makes of computers (Compaq, Packard Bell and Samsung) and all three boot up without the beep which I understand is the norm with all PCs.

Some beep on startup, some don't. If they're working OK don't worry about it.

What are your interrogation marks for Fusion? All PCs, I'm told, emit beeps on boot up which sometimes identify hardware problems. 1 or 2 beeps mean that the PC is healthy but others e.g. 1 long beep and two short ones, point to specific failures. Sorry, if my query was not clear.

Sorry if I have offended.
You stated that "I understand that I should get a beep on boot up" Then acknowledged that it is the norm to bootup without any beeps!
