I have a BT service (has run for several years) but BT say they can’t find any trace of it on my number. They are managing to extract their large monthly direct debit of £26.98 and I could just cancel that, but I know how nasty BT can be and its not worth the hassle.
I have my own wired router and own email service. What I want is a reasonable 8meg service where I don’t have to pay for a phone line I hardly use and ideally a mobile service or one I can use at a second location (AB45 3JQ line in house not active) I am at 20 days of the year.
Any ideas or recommendations?

If you want an 'up to' 8mb broadband service you will need a fixed line to your house, either telephone of cable. In both cases you will need to pay a rental charge to BT or VirginMedia. There are some broadband providers who claim to offer a one month contract and no t/p line rental but as they have to pay BT Wholesale the rental on that line, somehow or other the ISP will want that amount from you up front.
There are no current mobile deals that will give you anywhere near 8mb.
I'm intrigued to know what service you are paying BT twenty seven quid a month for.
