Walks Website (new) Please check?
      #39096 - Sat Jan 31 2004 10:13 AM

I got the idea for this site as I was interested in both walking and history.
Everyone has written walks in the country but not many in town.
I began looking only at my own city Newcastle but soon began to expand.
I get visitors from all over the world. The main thing they ask for is more pictures!
I would like constructive remarks as to how I could improve the site.
One thing I will concede on is that visitors to Health Walks cannot get back via a 'back' button. I can't get one to work.
The site is non profit making and the Health Walks section is supported and run to help the local sport and recreation dept.

Keith

Some things that i would do...

Change the background picture (or expand so that it covers a larger area). At the moment, on browsers here, due to the screen resolution, i can see that the image is tiled.

Also, i would not have the initial 'splash' page as you have at the moment. The page that this links to is much more informative to the visitor.

Other than that, it is very easy to use the site and browse around at the various pages etc.

From a search engine friendly point of view, you could remove the frames, but that is only if you want to attack the search engines.

A nice, informative site.

Tested in IE6 800x600 56k modem. Loads nice and fast. Might be nice if the ALT tag for the Enter button on the splash page said 'Enter' rather than 'click'. On the walks page, I would perhaps make the pictures links as well. Also might be nice if the links changed colour when the mouse is passed over them. Otherwise, a nice site. Good luck with it.

Dear 123 Promotions thank you for taking time to look at the site. I will certainly look at changing what you suggest. I'm not sure how to change the background.
Thanks.
Keith.

I really like the site, but I kinda put off by those buttons... I just don't like the colours...

Can I just ask if it is hand-coded HTML and if not which WYSIWYG editor did you use? Also, how did you promote it? (if you indeed did)

Merci,

THanks HJC,

You went a little too technical for me. I'm just mastering the web building thing. I'll have to ask someone else to explain your advise.

Thanks,

Keith.

He wants to know how you built the site. Did you write the HTML code for the site in something like Notepad or did you use a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor. These editors are a graphic tool to build sites, you drag and drop various things on the page to build it. You can see what it will look like as you build it.

Judging by the GENERATOR meta tag in the HEAD, Keith is using Namo WebEditor (v5.o (Trial) - for which there are several cracks available on the web (but we don't go there).

That's what I am using a one of those what you see is what you get. I am going to try to get rid of the pages with frames. As for promoting the site. I enjoy seeing the visitors on the bravenet counter from all over the world. Most of them ask for more pictures. I would imagine that would slow things down.

Thank you everyone who commented so far all have been very constructive and very valid. Now I just got to find the time and help to make things better.

All the best,

Keith.

Hello again Keith,

With regards to images; they do add value to a site. The trick is to place thumbnails (smaller, but recognisable images) on the pages themselves, hopefully not slowing down the page significantly, and link to a larger version of the same image - to open in a new browser window. This other window can be left unadorned, with just the image showing, or you can create pages for the full images that reflect the sites look & feel, perhaps with a Close This Window button/hyperlink.

Most image editors will allow you to Save for the web, which will optimise the image reducing the file size - both for the thumbnail and the larger image. I might add that the large image should be optimised to fit the width of your target audiences mean screen resolution (currently accepted as 800x600, though 1024x768 is gaining ground rapidly).

Changes I would make:

1. Get rid of the Back button at the bottom of some pages. It is unnecessary since all menu items are accessible on the left of each page anyway, and that nasty grey default spoils the colourful coordination of your pages.

2. Launch your Terms and Conditions into a separate window, or add another coloured menu item for it and include it in the frameset like everything else. I also second the advice of making your second page the index one, and the small blurb on your current splash page added to it if needed. I also would cut down on the ToS, you are not a lawyer so don't try talking like one, and you are not selling anything, so talk of liability, merchantibility, etc is nonsense. Keep it to the point, you are not responsible for third party pages, you make no guarantee that any walks are suitable for everyone, and the exclusive jurisdiction is that of England.

2. I love the colours for those buttons, they brighten up the page. However I would soften the multi-colour in the title tags to match the pastel shades used.

3. Personally I dislike Java applets unless they serve a genuine purpose. They take longest to load of all content, where Java is disabled as a security choice they leave a nasty grey area. Unless yours serves a real purpose other than showing you knew how to use the popular lake applet, perhaps that should go?

4. On Walks2.htm, you have the map of Newcastle loading into the same window. Don't do this! Firstly it is a violation of copyright to frame someone else's pages inside your site, as it makes it appear as though it is passed off as your own work. Secondly when I tried it the page load stalled then failed, which gives a bad impression of you as it left a blank white area of nothing. Always make sure all third party links go into a new window, so your site stays on screen, and any page failures won't mess up your own site.

5. Just a thought, since you use the back tag "Walk Back" on the walks pages themselves, wouldn't it be fun to make the more walks one read "Walk Ahead"?

6. Yuk, more ugly grey buttons! Why did you use those on the walks pages for Print? The trick I use for my print pages is to use a print image which compelents the site, and get it to launch a separate window with the plain style page in it, and that new page has the code for printing in it as an onLoad statement. That said, this is javascript, and doesn't always work. So maybe just give the user instructions to right click the frame and select Print for themselves?

7. Images. They can be made smaller file sizes and load faster, I took heavan.jpg and cut it down from 11 KB to 9 KB as an example. Then some are full sized images which you've shrunk into a confined space - they keep the original file sizes when you do this! Example, the Newcastle coat of arms is 429*532 in size and takes up 26 KB. It needs shrinking down to a thumbnail to cut the load time. Try this BatchThumbs program which I use - it's free, easy to use and very effective. I just made that coat of arms into the displayed size you wanted, converted it to JPG instead of GIF, and it shrunk from 26 KB to 11 KB.

8. Also, did you get consent to use them from the copyright owners? I know you didn't take them all yourself, your city coat of arms is protected by copyright for a start, and you need permission to use it (ask the council if you don't believe me). It may seem like nothing to you, but anyone whose images you've used could demand their removal leaving your site somewhat empty.

Beyond all this, well done. I like the colours used and the design overall. Just needs tidying up - and run the text through a spell checker as you have errors, specially in the ToS page.

Wow thanks for taking the time. That was great everything is very constructive. It'll take a while to get through what you've pointed out but I'll certainly try.
Great thanks again,

Keith.

TFC,

I tried to improve things by adding links to photos I downloaded from Free Foto. however like you say I went wrong on most as the link page showed the photo quality fine. But in most cases it only showed half a page which did look very good.

Thanks again,

It'll take a while but I'll get there. Its good to get help and advice from sensible people. I have had some problems with spam from 'net crawlers' since I put on the 'e' amil address. I don't really think that was a good idea. Although there is no other way anyone can mail the site.

Keith.

Re. the email. I provide a contact page with a form script instead, so the recipient is obscured from crawlers. If you haven't that capability (I suspect not as it's an ISP site), then either forget making it clickable and replace the @ with ' (at) ' so people know to swap that, or make it clickable but change the address to something like keith@REMOVETHISyourmailbox.com, so users know to take that out once they have it in their mail screen, but crawlers will spam a black hole.
