Recovery CD boot
      #390639 - Mon Apr 07 2008 01:59 AM

Hi All, i have a problem i would like help on. I have 1 other post regarding a seperate issue but i have a friends Acer Aspire 1352XC Laptop to which i am trying to use the recovery cd's that came with it. I changed the boot sequence in the BIOS to CD/DVD > HDD > Removable Device > Network. This is normally fine as i have done this hundreds of times with no problems but the laptop won't boot from CD/DVD. I tried to use the disks in another pc and it still won't boot. These are the original cd's with no scratches.

Is there another way to use these disks as they require 16bit dos. I tried to open the RECOVERY.EXE on my win vista command prompt and it said it was only for acer systems do you want to proceed. It looks as though i can use command promvista but not XP

The first thing to try is to copy the boot cd to another one using Nero or something similar. You sometimes find that the boot track gets damaged but a copy works. If it's not that, are you absolutely sure that it is a boot CD? Sometimes the recovery system relies on a floppy disk to boot up which then calls the CD for the rest of the data.

Thanks greysts, according to the acer support for this series model then it instructs you to boot from cd/dvd, however when i used the disks on my own pc running vista i opened the RECOVERY.EXE file under the tools folder and was promted in command prompt as if it was ready to proceed but on this system it states
Quote:

"E:\TOOLS\RECOVERY.EX, C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application"

I will try to copy the cd's to see if that makes a difference, but my system it relativly new and it won't boot to cd and i am thinking that they are wrong in saying that they do boot from cd. as for the floppy, this laptop doesn't come with a floppy disk drive.

Thanks

Hi Greysts, i managed to copy the disks but i am getting no where as they are still not recognised as a boot disk. Contacted Acer Support and been advised to press ALT+F10 during windows & at boot to enter the eRecovery but i am unable to do this as i feel as though the eRecovery is corrupt.
When i try other boot disks they work fine and i know it isn't a problem there.

What possible answers are they when these pe installed os from manufacturers are corrupt to get them sorted. I can only think of one possible solution and that is to get a full or OEM MS XP disk....

When i check the disk i am unable to find any boot files??? is there any way to create ones and burn it along with the cdcontents

The Acer reply makes the message from your previous post understandable. That message suggests that the RECOVERY.EXE file needs to run under NTFS so a normal DOS boot disk won't do the job. Booting the PC and pressing Alt+F10 means NTFS is available to run your Recovery file.

There are a few possibilities I can think of.

(1) Borrow an XP CD that does work, use that to boot the PC and then try the Alt+F10. Swap the CD's and try and run Recovery.
(2) Have a look at this and create BartsPE CD. You'll still need an XP CD to do it.
(3) Final desperate solution - buy one of these and start over.

Just putting my penny worth in if you don't mind.
I had the same problem with a friend of mines Acer re the recovery discs.
No matter what I tried I was getting the same problem.
I finally sorted it out as Greysts suggests and used an XP CD and everything went fine from there.
Once again sorry to butt in.

Stuarty

If you can boot the PC and you have a ‘proper’ recovery CD, try creating a Windows CD, as follows:
Search your hard drive for a folder called i386 which should contain all the installation files needed to install Windows. It may be inside the Windows folder and you may need to "show hidden files and folders". If it is there you can burn this to a CD to install from. You need to run a file called WINNT32.EXE to start the re-installation. You will, of course, still need to source all the drivers.

Have a look here http://www.easydesksoftware.com/recovery.htm or install Windows from the I386 folder, here http://www.easydesksoftware.com/I386.htm

Hi All,

I did everything suggested but nothing worked so i lost the plot. My friend took my advice that was given by you guys and resorted to buying an OEM XP disk as this way the laptop can be tailored to her needs and not what acer set it up for as it was using valuable disk space given that it only had 20Gb. The installation went great as you would expect and merged and created a backup partition for personal files.

I am not a fan of these pe installed systems but this is the first time i have done this and to be honest, it will probably be the last

Anyway, thanks for your help and support on this, much appreciated
