My 9 year old PC is creaking at the seams and I've finally decided to take the plunge and join everyone else in the 21st Century by buying a new one (although I haven't bought one yet as I've been using the problem below as a good excuse not to).
I currently have a 19GB hard drive which is 18.2GB full, mainly of media files (almost all music, photos and videos), with some fairly hefty Word and Excel files on there too.
I'm wondering what the best way is to get my files from the old PC onto the new one? I had thought of uploading them all to an online storage service like Mediamax (25GB free) then downloading them again, but with the speed my current one goes at the uploads are painfully slow and it may be the 22nd Century before they complete.
Is there a better alternative? Maybe a nice cheap cable that I connect to each PC and push a button and everything gets copied over in an instant? Or should I buy some kind of external storage like a memory stick or an external drive and use that to manually transfer between machines? I'm a bit loathe to go down the CD route as I suspect that could take a while and be a cumbersome affair.
I'd be grateful for any advice anyone could offer.
I personally would purchase a >>>> USB Flash drive <<<< to transfer your files. They are very cheap to buy these days.
The example I have shown has 2GB capacity, but you can get larger versions. They are used at their best on USB 2.0 but as your System is very old, USB 1.0 would be the norm and it will still transfer files but at a much reduced speed.
You will also need to install the supplied drivers, or download from the manufactures website to allow it to work.
Thanks for that. I guess I'm just being lazy in wanting a cable that does all the work for me!
I didn't realise drives like the one you recommended came with such large memories. There's one on the site you recommended thats 8GB for £16, so I'd only need a couple of transfers with that and everything would be copied over.
Thanks for the advice. My final excuse for not putting my hand in my pocket and buying a decent PC has been rebuffed - just need to figure out what PC to buy now...
