The directory name is invalid? (SORTED)

I downloaded AVG as my free trial of Norton was running out but when I click on the download to install it I get

C:\Users\dean\Desktop\avg75fee_519a1276.exe

The directory name is invalid.

it also does the same for other programmes downloaded with both firefox and internet explorer 7

the last programme I downloaded that worked I think was Glary utilities

I turned off the user account control after I remembered getting a windows update this morning now everything works
